Simple cool lovely one. | User Comment Submitted by 0xDB on 10 January 2019 User Comment Submitted by Dr.Science on 28 November 2018
Clean, nice screen. I know it is a matter of personal taste - I would have Maybe put something more to the fire. But on the other hand, keeping the Intro short in memory is what your goal was and thus very well done. | User Comment Submitted by Cruzer on 27 November 2018
Excellent PETSCII logo there, Shine! | User Comment Submitted by Hammerfist on 21 November 2018
@Pitcher, thanks for replying to my comment. I tried the other SIDS in Vice at your suggestion, but that did not change anything for my main gripe, so I guess I'll just have to turn down the volume when enjoying it. Better luck for me next time I suppose ;) | User Comment Submitted by Pitcher on 20 November 2018
Like I've always said from the start, this was never made for this competition, the competition was a good excuse to finish it off, so please bear that in mind before getting too critical.
The petscii has been around for I'm guessing near 2 years, and i was very shocked at the fact it had never been used before.
The whole idea came from there's just enough space to squeeze a scroller in between the gap in the existing graphics.
I did have a conversation with shine about some possible flame animations, and as eager and willing as he was, the decision was, it would bulk the intro out quite quickly, when for a crack intro, full screen petscii and the colour map really pushes space to the max anyway.
So I've just used what I had at the time, only change graphic wise was to copy a column of chars over as a scroll buffer.
It's also had some input from other Fairlight members and for that im grateful,
Trasher always kept on about it needed some sort of flame movements, and I'm quite pleased with how they eventually turned out after trying a few different things.
Bacchus suggested about making the custom petscii/custom charset combination upon startup to gain some space and extra packing efficiency.
And the intro has grown in size especially with the music, just because I really like it and the space was there for it in the competition rules, but in reality an extra 1kb can be lost with a simple music change, and if needs be drop the little bit of custom chars and go rom only for an extra memory saving.
So yes no excuses, no bullshit, just facts of it will get used as a real crack intro one day, as that is what it was originally designed to be,
Something memorable, pleasing to the eye, with enough space to to be able to get some credit's and greetings read by the viewers. | User Comment Submitted by TheRyk on 20 November 2018
imho either some more shades of blue or even some more firelike colors for the flames and some animation in the flames, would have done no harm, otherwise a handy lil thingy, and indeed, small size excuseplains a lot if it is supposed to be used in front of a crack | User Comment Submitted by Ksubi on 19 November 2018
A nice little intro. I think you've done well with the limitations of PETSCII. (Nice fresh logo by Shine, but is it FairLight or Fairlight? ;)) I'd probably speed up the scroller +1 though. | User Comment Submitted by Pitcher on 19 November 2018
Yes the sine wave I played around with for a while, I did try smaller increments of scroll of the flames bottom up, not getting very technical but some where zigging while the others where zagging ;).
So I made a 256 byte sine table, and jump the table in increments of 3, we have 71 lines of scroll, so in theory an ever evolving wave, plus no need for either sinewave reset check code or using space for sinewave copy buffers.
As for the music, I'm tone deaf, I either like something or I don't, I had the intro with no music and played every Druid remix tune I could find in the background in a sid player, I liked this one the most, plus in was made by a Fairlight member too.
Its was also designed for a 6581 sid, if that makes any differences to what you've played it on? | User Comment Submitted by Raistlin on 18 November 2018
I like it. The logo is great and the design is fine.
One small change you could make would be to alter the sin-wave of the fire based on height, such that the top waves more, the bottom waves by 0-1 pixels and the rest somewhere in-between. | User Comment Submitted by Hammerfist on 18 November 2018
Design wise I like it a lot, the logo is great, the effect fits well and I agree that downplaying it makes the logo shine (badum-ts).
Only thing I can't get myself to like is the music, I'm afraid. The sweeps in the main melody sound off key to me. I have zero musical training or background, so base it purely on user experience, but I would use the original - tried and tested - one. | User Comment Submitted by Thierry on 18 November 2018 User Comment Submitted by Flavioweb on 17 November 2018 User Comment Submitted by Pitcher on 16 November 2018
Everyone has there own opinion, and I appreciate that, but with full screen petscii graphics at the quality they are, what can you do effect wise to them not to spoil them?, I decided on simple code and effects to hopefully fit with them.
And remember it's a crack intro, the size allowed is way to big to start with, this intro grew in size especially because of the size constraints where massive and let it, this is a little over 4KB comoressed.
When it's used on a real crack, like all entrys should be, its to tag a release and brag about what you've managed in the smallest space possible, it will be rom font all through and much smaller music, but hey how, what do Fairlight know ? | User Comment Submitted by Jammer on 16 November 2018
Cool PETSCII logo but intro as such seems a little sleepy ;) | User Comment Submitted by Motion on 16 November 2018 User Comment Submitted by hedning on 16 November 2018
Simple, nice petscii and spirit. Works very well with crack intro in mind. |
