Disk Cipher V1.0
(C) 2015 John Selck (Graham/Oxyron)
This tool is able to encrypt or decrypt a 1541 disk. The encryption algorithm
used is the Advanced Encryption Standard using a 256 bit key (AES-256). The
key is generated from an ASCII password using the SHA-256 hash algorithm. I
didn't bother to implement a full PBKDF2 algorithm since the C64 would be far
too slow for that task. This means that you have to choose a longer password
to have the same security as if PBKDF2 was used. Assuming you use a password
using random upper case letters, lower case letters and numbers, the password
has to be atleast 4 characters longer to achieve similar security.
Encrypting/decrypting is done by the disk drive autonomously. It takes about
12 minutes to finish (about 1 second per block).
Please note that loading the directory from an encrypted disk may result in
a deadlock. If that happens, press RUN/STOP + RESTORE to exit to Basic and
enter RUN to restart the tool.
In case you want to encrypt a disk but still want an unencrypted directory,
you can tell the tool to skip track 18 during encryption/decryption.
