The lack of X movement and explosions are part of the original "design" of Hyperzap from 1987 (and there's no sprite animation engine in there to handle the explosions right now).

I'm resisting the urge to throw another day at turning it into Super Hyperzap 2018 where there *would be* X moves because there's already a more complex shoot e'm up in the works for C64CD which does that and more... but who knows. =-)

Very nice.
An explosion from the enemies themselves when you hit them would finish the game off also.

nice one!
I'd suggest to add a little X movement to the enemies. now if you don't move and keep fire button pressed you basically get unlimited lives :) (try that at warp speed)
