Rudi Stranden (°1981, Norway) makes drawings and paintings. By applying abstraction, Stranden creates with daily, recognizable elements, an unprecedented situation in which the viewer is confronted with the conditioning of his own perception and has to reconsider his biased position.
His practice provides a useful set of allegorical tools for maneuvering with a pseudo-minimalist approach in the world of drawing: these meticulously planned works resound and resonate with images culled from the fantastical realm of imagination. By putting the viewer on the wrong track, he tries to create works in which the actual event still has to take place or just has ended: moments evocative of atmosphere and suspense that are not part of a narrative thread. The drama unfolds elsewhere while the build-up of tension is frozen to become the memory of an event that will never take place.
His works doesn’t reference recognizable form. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted. By rejecting an objective truth and global cultural narratives, he creates intense personal moments masterfully created by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, luring the viewer round and round in circles.
His work urge us to renegotiate drawing as being part of a reactive or – at times – autistic medium, commenting on oppressing themes in our contemporary society. With a subtle minimalist approach, he creates work in which a fascination with the clarity of content and an uncompromising attitude towards conceptual and minimal art can be found. The work is aloof and systematic and a cool and neutral imagery is used.
His works are given improper functions: significations are inversed and form and content merge. Shapes are dissociated from their original meaning, by which the system in which they normally function is exposed. Initially unambiguous meanings are shattered and disseminate endlessly. Rudi Stranden currently lives and works in Kristiansand. | User Comment Submitted by The Phantom on 9 January 2019
I tend to like releases like this.
For me, I can learn different shading techniques. Often, color blending or even anti-aliasing (I am horrible with both).
I do think a lot of this could have had far more effort put into it. The R has a huge grey block in it, and there should be a space with the E, so that the R doesn't look like an A. | User Comment Submitted by Smasher on 9 January 2019

Holy shit, that rating's gone through the floor since I last looked. The median must have crossed the intermodal gap. | User Comment Submitted by Raistlin on 9 January 2019
I'm not a big fan of the border colour to be honest. Can you re-release this please with a black border? | User Comment Submitted by chatGPZ on 9 January 2019 User Comment Submitted by hedning on 9 January 2019
Try to work out better ways of converting pictures, if you are into that... | User Comment Submitted by Compyx on 9 January 2019
Pretty amazing simulation of conversion artifacts/color clashes. |
