try renaming ##.prg to !
for me ##.prg doesn't work for loading from command line, while x64 ! loads, but I can only try vice. | User Comment Submitted by Tyke on 11 October 2019
For the life of me, I cannot get this game to run. I'm using the Ultimate II+ cartridge. Which file should I load, the one entitled "##"??? That doesn't work. Any help would be much appreciated. | User Comment Submitted by 0xDB on 17 August 2019
@Carrion: This version (as the de-asm notes in the archive clearly state) is NOT the tape version as your friend claims. It is based upon the original two .g64 disk images from the "C64_Preservation_Project_10th_Anniversary_Collection". Anyway, this particular entry still should not be downloaded. Get V1.1 instead. | User Comment Submitted by Carrion on 4 March 2019
I don't know if you 0xDB and other guys know but by adding 5 levels of laser you apparently broke the game - this version of the game. Oh and my statement above has nothing to do with my criticism about crack scene ;)
There are 3 versions of this game released back then. Believe it or not with different level of laser power levels. There was a version with 3 levels of laser power and a version with 5 levels of laser power.
How I know all that? Let's say I have a friend who is a crazy Mega expert on all games (and I mean all - really all retro games, not only C64).
He knows that because he plays all the games. Now he is at C64, playing all games released year by year. (yeah, I told you he is creazy ;) but I APPRECIATE his level of expertise. He is kind of an expert game historian if you will and also amazing master game player.
Long story short - what he claims, or even strongly states is that there were 3 versions of Turrican II (2 on discs and one on tape). Your version is the tape version with 3 levels of laser power.
My friend doesn't have an account here nor he wants one. He asked me to write this. I have more details if you're interested. | User Comment Submitted by 0xDB on 22 February 2019 User Comment Submitted by 0xDB on 22 February 2019
Nevermind, I can confirm laser can not be upgraded to 5 in this version. It appears to be a bug in the .g64 dump of the original disks that I based this on(from "C64_Preservation_Project_10th_Anniversary_Collection_G64.zip"). Specifically, I have identified RAM location $$07ef as the laser power level and the code piece where the game checks that on upgrading does this:
.C:5a59 AD EF 07 LDA $07EF
.C:5a5c C9 04 CMP #$04
.C:5a5e F0 03 BEQ $5A63
That $04 at location $5a5d should be a $05. I'll patch it, V1.1 coming up. Thanks for reporting this. :) | User Comment Submitted by 0xDB on 22 February 2019
No idea @insane. Maybe I missed something. I have problems finding enough laser upgrades in a row without accidentally collecting something else to test it. Maybe the game checks for the presence of the drive-code somewhere and sets a flag that prohibits the laser from upgrading as another copy protection mechanism. What's the power level 5 laser supposed to look like? Is it five lines of chars (same height as player sprite)? | User Comment Submitted by insane on 21 February 2019
Great work! Yet this version also can't upgrade the Laser more than 3 times (at least not in my play test).
My original Turrican2 Disk as well as nearly all of the other disk based cracks do allow the laser to reach power level 5.
Any ideas about this? |
