Seems like the packer is involved, $dc00-03 state isn't set properly after depack and in the space check $ffe4 never returns $20. Unpacking and exomizing the result works, so it's definately due to the packer used.
Patch the prg like this to reset the CIA regs before executing
08E5  58        CLI 
08E6  20 A3 FD  JSR $FDA3
08E9  4C 0A C1  JMP $C10A

to patch the d64 directly,
search for 58 20 0A C1 4C AE A7
change to: 58 20 A3 FD 4C 0A C1

Doesnt hit the space bar check routine but I didnt care to check for the reason. Freeze/Monitor and "g c5dd" to get to the game.
