About the effect:

In order to use the ECM mode for something good, I played with individual rasterbars for the four background colors. The rasterbar colors are white, cyan, light blue, followed by a constant dark blue. Together with the black bakground above this makes use of 5 background colors + 1 foreground color per character. The individual background colors are used to have the rasterbars starting at different lines between neighbouring characters. By making this starting line a phase-shifted since for the four background colors, we get the water wave effect.

However, there is the need to update 4 background colors plus the border color before a rasterline starts, which requires at least 5 * 4 cycles, including the need for loading new values into a register, because last time I looked, the 6502 only had 3 registers that can be used to store values into memory. SAX, SHX and SHY (Gesundheit!) may help avoiding an LD? every now and then though.
Especially around badlines, timing is not perfect. Luckily, in the wave demo you don’t spot the jitter so easily.

About the meaning of text and graphics:

The numbers given are the sea level height of the respective objects.

The Doges Palace in Venice is almost at sea level, no big surprise as this is what Venice is best known for.
The island of Tuvalu has a maximum height of 5m.
The Washington monument in DC is also a mere 9m above sea level.
The last one is the famous opera house in Sidney. While it looks closer to the sea in most pics, according to my research it is 10m above sea level.

The raise of sea level is mainly induced my global warming. We don’t know exactly how much it will raise, but there has been measured a steady increase of 0,33 cm/year. The scenario shown in this short demo is therefore predicting far into the future, but I hope, that there will be some C64 scene guy present in 200 years to look at this again.
