Keeping a game within a limit of 256 bytes is, of course, a challenge. Apart from making the code as compact as possible, a significant bytesaver was to determine the correct solution with a checksum. In the end, I ran out of bytes for coding a routine for delaying a couple of seconds while the green "success!"-border is showing. Luckily, Commodore included a more or less useful RAM test function into their code (this is what makes the C64 stall a but after it is turned on or reset). Calling the RAM test keeps the RAM in the same state afterward, but it wastes around 2 seconds - all with a 3-byte JSR call! For the levels, I first thought of saving them with run length encoding. But since the levels only require to poke a couple of inverted digits into screen mem, it was shorter to use STX commands and switch the values with INX or DEX.
