Making the code for this game made me really appreciate hardware sprites. Not for the possibility of pixel-perfect placement - it was clear from the beginning that we would drop this feature since it is a PETSCII game - but handling the character-emulated sprites was a lot of effort, even though I had encapsulated everything in a charsprite engine written in preparation. But clipping, re-positioning of sprites in a hard-scroll cycle, and restoring background when moving a sprite was quite a hassle.
It sure was an interesting experience coding this game, but now I'm happy that I never owned a Plus/4 or any other machine without hardware sprites. And, whenever somebody compares 8bit-computers and states that two machines are basically equally capable, except for the small detail that the one system has sprites while the other has not - hell f##k, this is a BIG deal!
Anyway, events like the Only Sprites Compo depict the potential of sprites far better than my writing here.
It is said that around 70% of the chip area in the VIC-II chip is spent on sprites - well done, Commodore, it was worth it!

A tribute to the Great Giana Sisters drawn in pure PETSCII.
Starting with an interpretation of the famous intro, it contains several day and night levels with ascending difficulty. If you succeed you will be rewarded with the ending sequence.
All is accompanied with a fantastic remix of Chris Hülsbeck's intro masterwork and two brand-new ingame tunes.
