In 1986, Klaus Kramer published a game *obviously* inspired by Boulder Dash in the 68000er magazine as a type-in BASIC listing for the Amiga. It was different from Boulder Dash, no "arcade" elements, just pure logic/strategy/puzzle.
Several years later, "little Zirias" got hold of that magazine and actually typed in the listing.
Well, I was hooked. Technically, the game kind of sucked, like most BASIC games. But the concept was awesome. So, I first improved it in AmigaBASIC, adding a timer, adding in-game music ... and later, I started doing remakes. The first remake targeted MS-DOS PCs and was written in Pascal. This version is lost due to a harddisk crash. The second remake targeted "modern" systems (Windows, Linux, ...) and was written in C, using SDL. This one still exists, but never was good enough for a proper release.
Then, finally, in 2018, I thought "why not do a remake for the C64". I started, designed tiles, wrote some code to display that stuff, including a "mini-map" (because the C64 version had to be scrolling, not enough display space). So, after doing that, I abandoned the project and almost forgot about it ....
Until late in 2022! A lot of work had to be done, but now, it seems it will lead straight to a nice and complete "new" game for the C64. Let's see :-) |
