Next compo will include new rule for sure: "...has to use at least one sprite on screen..." ;D
BTW great demo <3 congrats. it's amazing how much can be done without "flesh"...

As cool and as clever as 'No Sprites' is, is it really entering into the spirit of the compo?
For an 'Only Sprites Compo' i want to see sprites! ..and lots of them! ;D

Holy shit, this is awesome! Really amazing work, guys! Trident, what the heck? I’m starting to suspect that someone’s figured out how to use AI to make C64 demos and this is the result. I’d say that Bacchus was commanding the AI - but these demos have too much style! :p

Brilliant stuff.

Crazy! This demonstrates the scene-spirit: unintended hardware bug/feature is used for effects that should not be visible in the first place :)

@trap: thanks! :) the final, smooth, moving bar uses a ghostbyte split to open up to the underlying $d021 color at the right cycle, and $d016 to make it smooth across cycle boundaries. all the other moving bars use a raw $d020 split, so that's why they're so chunky, as the split always has to happen on a cycle boundary.

Okay for some fun again! Trident Tortured me this week with setting up real C64's and i had various results with machines, some worked better when WARM and some didnt not work as well as other machines. The Vic Gray Dot bug is fickle one. It needs to be run on a New Vic model. Also I had issues with the sound on one of my machines and the other sid songs sounded fine, so I tested demo on another machine with the same sid-chip and then it sounded good, might be some other thing that is bad in the machine I tested with first. Best of luck playing this on real hardware, VICE is simply there and works best if you in a pickle.

Nice one, Trident. It's funny. We wanted to make a moving chessboard using cycle delay and d016 for the last part in our demo, but the sprites broke the timing so we had to give up that plan. Nice to see an implementation of a similar technique in the smooth bar near the end in your demo or maybe you used magic byte to get it to move smooth?
Anyway, really really nice! Thank you.

this demo uses no bitmaps, no chars - and no sprites. everything you see is done with the color registers $d020/$d021 and ghostbytes.

(so while it technically follows the letter of the rules, it could certainly be argued that it breaks the spirit of the rules ;) )
