You see it al wrong. The perspective tells me that the birds/bats aren't even near the face.
So my idea it that there's the smell of death coming out of the mouth and the vultures are flying towards it.

Just added a screenshot - nice image, spooky feel. The eye conveys a disturbing sense of malevolence.
