Why was it that American games versus European games were so much more focused on heavy multicolour bitmap graphics that required heavy disk loading throughout the game? Europeans learned to use the hires modes and convert to character 4K sets in stead of 16K images. So much faster and enables much more smooth game play. And don't lecture me about the US had all diskdrives while Europa were restricted to tape loads. History showed that any game imported from the US (diskettes) would be converted to tape multi-load and thus run equally good in Europe. And in countries like France and Germany the diskette drives were more common than tapes. In the UK there may have been the other way around, but again: multi load on tape(s)! What could have changed the game market for the better were if Commodore had opted for early implementations of the >16K Cartridges. Like those that were made towards the end: 512Kb ROM on cartridge games. Instant loading and you could do things that normally was impossible without the extra RAM available. Also it pains me that the Commodore RAM expansions were poorly marketed and made available for end consumers. Same with the 1581 drive - if it were set in a bit earlier and for a fair price, that could have become the late standard for games - the last 6 years of the C64's commercial life (which ended in 1994). |
