Hey GH, thanks for the elaborate and friendly feedback :)

Actually I'm working in that "blind" mode, since I build up SID and MOD part at the same time. So the only way to test if the current mod and sid patterns works well together is to compile the whole song and listen to it. :)

Oh, yeah

One day I would like to know who gave this a (anonymous) 3 out of 10...

Thank you.

As said before sound designing at it's finest.
Excellent pallet of sounds that seems to blend together nicely.
Don't mind the "somewhat off tuning" here and there. To me it just the right amount of detuning wich
fits the whole Lead song and Amiga feel all together :D

And I just 100%ove the little details spend in the Arps-down features and transposing patterns
towards the end of the song!

Great effort and very time assuming this little 2 minutes track as Mangar already stated.
Not "entirely" blind that is. You can edit along while playing a wav file of either a sid or mod but
I agree it's not what most composers would consider a second nature kinda worklflow :D

I'm still in testing mode... ;)

Technically awesome. Tuning off here and there, makes it a bit meh.

Thanks for that, CreaMD :) The whole situation is a bit silly, really.

Added production notes to have Rapture mentioned at least "somewhere" ;-). I hope I didn't fckup anything. In case I did, I apologize. I think rapture should probably be in credits as help, because he provided the original data. His scene entry has been restored meanwhile.

Besides the overall feedback is fantastic, and I'm ever grateful for that, folks!! :-)

Well of course it's a subjective experience, so I blame noone. I've crammed so much stuff in there, we're hitting one or the other limit. I usually design the sounds in a way that they work well in this environment, however in the case of Giana it was about reproducing the sounds as close as possible.

I guess you guys confuse proper quality with liking of very tune in DS game arrangement, I presume. Saying it lack in quality is almost a nonsense - at least in terms of porting that theme. And one commenter picks up the opinion from another knowing the shit or not. Damn ;) I don't want to be LMan's henchman here but that crowd psychology and following the whistleblower sometimes gets on my nerves ;)

Well, my first thought was "cool hires gfx" but the tune failed somehow to usual LMan quality standard. Now i know this is not your fault. I don't know exactly the technical details of it. The comments made clear, that this is more work than i believed. :D AWESOME !!! <3

I Think many doesn't know how much work it is to make good "digi-sid"'s. Lman has really proven again that he is the master of this domain! It is extremely hard to make samples sounds good in 7kHz, but all samples here sounds very clear. Secondly, composing "blindly" as there is no editor that plays both the sid parts and the sample parts same time, is very hard. It takes time to puzzle this together and achieve this level of sound output! Markus, you did it again. And if you even start coding demos, I bet LFT will be in hard competition! ;)

Thanks all for your kind feedback!

More background:

With the musical content already in place, porting it over to the SID was of course mostly a technical challenge rather than a musical one: fit the original 12 into 3 digi channels, fit 800kb samples into 35kb. 90% of the musical content plays within the sample part. Uwe's engine combines the 3 Sample channels on the SID's voice 3, with the remaining 2 voices providing hand made subharmonics and high frequency noises to return some of the clarity that is lost due to the heavy downsampling.

So to make it fit at all and have it still sound decent, I used a lot of different psychoacoustic tricks. And THCM tickled every little cycle out of the code so I could have the graphics in there.

I love the pic. It's awesomely cute. The song is too sampleish, everything sounds separated and scattered as it is with most of C64 musics that rely heavily on samples. This or that, one of the better examples of samples usage on C64 and I'm sure some heads would explode if this sound was available back in original Giana Sisters era ;-)

not my cup of tea, maybe the original Huelsbeck piece stuck too much in my ears and I also dont know the DS one. Also the digi part this time feels too dirty. The picture is lovely, first time I see Giana imagined in "real life" in a way that I like it.

Category "HiRes music"? Really?! 8D

And I thought I've seen everything!

Anyway, nice one, especially gfx. Don't know DS, so can't judge if digis were worth the effort, but sounds alright.

This is a remake of the beautiful title tune from Giana Sisters for the Nintendo DS, released 2009. The tune was composed and arranged by Fabian del Priore aka Rapture, and is itself a cover of Chris Hülsbeck's original Giana Sisters Title Theme.

I contacted Rapture about my intent to recreate the tune on a stock c64. He liked the idea and kindly provided the original audio source files. My challenge was to port every little detail from the original and make it fit the limits given by the c64's hardware.

To have some pretty visuals to go with the sound, I hand-pixelled this screen in Gimp and Pixcen, based on Alex "Pikomi" Pierschel's original artwork. The graphics mode is regular hires.

The music engine was coded by THCM, with the SID part done in CheeseCutter, and the sample part in OpenMPT.

Black Forest Games, who are the subsequent operators of Armin Gessert's legacy, kindly gave permission to release this tune. Thank you for that!! All rights to Giana Sisters are reserved by Black Forest Games.

Hope you enjoy it! 😊
