How could you? They don't have Lemon64 database.
Meanwhile, you have given someone not related to Lemon64 your password. Same with people who have registered there with same username and password they use at Lemon64. If I was setting up a forum to get passwords I would even log unsuccesful login passwords just in case people use their Lemon64 password by accident.
I know, I'm overly suspicious. That's part of my job :) |

Did they underestimate the traffic? :-/ |

Several people crawling all the content doesn't help, especially if they are stupid enough to misconfigure their spiders. From now on every IP caught ignoring robots.txt will be banned for good. |

I must be pretty fucking stupid then, because I have no idea what "misconfiguring my spider" means in the first place. It's the first I've heard of using the word "spider" in anything other than biological context. So please do explain? |

Thanks Oswald. Now, is configuring the spider/spiders (??) the user's responsibility or does it have something to do with search engines and that sort? |

User responsibility. According to what TNT says, some people are misconfiguring these programs, so they overload the site. I guess robots.txt describes what is acceptable for such use and whats not. |

Okay, good to know. Since I didn't know such a thing existed, it probably wasn't me overloading it, but could it be possible that someone could be hacking into my spiders and making me indirectly overload Lemon64? Or in any other user's, for that matter? |

no, these "spiders" or "robots" takes some effort & knowledge to set up and use. if you dont know them you dont have one.
ofcourse it's possible that someone secretly takes over your machine and installs one, but its highly unlikely. |

Okay, thanks for the info, Oswald. And apologies to TNT for the over-reacting and being ignorant. =P |

@Jailbird: Thanks! I hope you don't mind me using it :D https://www.lemon64.com/
@meltingpot667: No problem. You were ignorant, now you have been educated :) Those bandwidth leeches were doing multiple page loads each second, way faster than any human can browse the site.
Stupid HostGator admins had set the bandwidth limit to 15 GB, I pumped it up to 1 TB - let's see if Kim sends me a an angry letter with a big bill next month ;) |

Well this is just great... now I've managed to ban myself from Lemon64 :(
I was reading the Welcome back thread Welcome back!
where encore mentions that the preview post function doesn't work, I tried it and, yes it doesn't work. A few days later, Mayhem seems to have found the solution: Quote:I had a think, I had a look at profiles, had an idea, and tried it out. Try changing your board profile language to English. For some reason, preview doesn't work currently when set to Swedish. I'll raise it in the mod forum to be looked at.
So, I go to edit my profile to change profile language, where I discover that my email address is an old one no longer in use, so I figure I'll just change that too while I'm at it.
It's when I go to click "confirm changes" (or whatever its called) something bad happens, a message which I can't quote here exactly because it was only shown on screen for a few seconds, but it said something like "you forgot to fill in your email bla bla..." and that my account had been deactivated.
Now I tried to use the "I forgot my password" option but was give this information: Quote:Sorry, but your password cannot be retrieved because your account is currently inactive. Please contact the forum administrator for more information.
Lesson learned: if it aint't broke, don't fix it?
TNT, some advice? :) |

Ah, just forget about it!
I've just recieved the reactivation email.
I just automatically assumed I was in a Catch 22 situation and that any email from Lemon64 would be sent to my old inactive email account.
Lesson learned: first check your email! :) |
