Ninjasbane  (NJB)  (1985 - 7 June 1989)

N/A
Ex member of :
Crypt (23/9-2006 -> 16/12-2006), Vendetta (1987 -> 2011), Weird Hell-Bent Operators (1987 -> 1988)
Functions :
Fullscreen Graphician, Hacker, Organizer, Phreaker, Sysop
Founder of :
Vendetta

Handlestory :
The handle was created in response to the billion or so "Ninja" handles on the BBSes in 1985 (as a joke). I had previously used "Mr. Sharpy" on Apple II and IBM BBSes from 1980ish-1985, taken from an electric pencil sharpener.

I haven't used "Ninjasbane" since I left the scene as I knew it back in 1989, (I outgrew it) and have since been known as Agony, Felon, Kingnine, among other nyms.

Pointless navel gazing and self reflection to follow:

1. In retrospect, despite how clever I thought the name Ninjasbane was (Ninja's Bane), no one else thought it was all that clever. In fact, most people didn't even know how to pronounce it correctly. I got "Ninjas Bay-Knee" a lot.

2. I spent most of my teenage life on the telephone. I learned how to phreak in 1985 at 14 and I didn't stop until I was eighteen. I talked to a lot of people. A LOT. From local crews in various states to the upper echelons of the "scene", from dudes I met on Q-Link to late night Alliance conferences with Euros, I met some great (and many not-so-great) people in my tele-travels. I miss many of whom I remember, regret forgetting the ones I forgot, and wish I had spent more time documenting everything. I also wish that more North American sceners were active (or at least a little curious) in today's scene.

3. Now days, I absolutely HATE the telephone and don't even own a cellular telephone.

4. I hate using Ninjasbane here on the CSDb. The only reason I keep it is so it will act as a "beacon" of sorts and that someone I used to know will drop me a line here. It's been over five years and this still hasn't happened.

Trivia :
I just can't stand being Ninjasbane anymore. Just Jon will suffice from now on. If you want to know my credentials and credits, just look under my Ninjasbane entry.

I was a freelance artist for many minor US and Canadian groups.

Most of my graphics are lost to the annals of time. Some were good, some were bad, and some were never shared. But the ones listed below were "saved", for what that's worth.

I retired from phreaking on June 7, 1989 (my 18th birthday) and slowly lost interest in the Commodore 64. I bought my first PC in 1994 and ran a low-traffic BBS for a while.

Did part of my Master's Thesis on The Scene (How computer technologies and various online sub-cultures have shaped language.)

The Ninjasbane Curse: Since I rediscovered the "scene", I did screens / graphics for Wanderer, Secret Man, Crypt, Krionyx and a few independently. The reaction from the scene has ranged from strong dislike to raging hatred. If I offer to draw ANYthing for you, say no.

I have recently been accepted in to a Ph.D. program.

I now work for the University of Wisconsin (UW).

About this site:
CSDb (Commodore 64 Scene Database) is a website which goal is to gather as much information and material about the scene around the commodore 64 computer - the worlds most popular home computer throughout time. Here you can find almost anything which was ever made for the commodore 64, and more is being added every day. As this website is scene related, you can mostly find demos, music and graphics made by the people who made the scene (the sceners), but you can also find a lot of the old classic games here. Try out the search box in the top right corner, or check out the CSDb main page for the latest additions.
