very, very nice pic carrion. i just watched it on the real thing and the overall impression is great. yes, the dithering on the mountains look a bit out of the concept and there are some clashes left, but i do not mind. the composition works really well and i like the postcard atmosphere. thanks for the greetings :) | User Comment Submitted by booker on 29 May 2011
Excellent execution Tomek.
Too bad you didn't wait and sent it to Stary Piernik's open compo 3 days later. :-P

every now and then i watch pictures on the real thing when they appear to be really good... and it just happened! great composition of nature and science fiction and great pixeling style in general! only the mountains are a bit weak. i prefer the robin levy style, whatever that is. ;-)
i'm a big fan of your unique works, back in the 90s and now more than ever. keep it going and congrats for leaving crest. :-P | User Comment Submitted by DeeKay on 27 May 2011
PAL: "How do one create NUFLI? are there any software for that?"
Whatever floats your boat: IFLI-editors, Drazlace, Project One, Timanthes, Pixen, Promotion, Photoshop, Paintshop Pro - or even the NUFLI editor itself, hello Bimber! ;-) Just pixel it with the 16 c64-colors and then push it through Mufflon!... And do some bugfixing in the editor if you want/need to afterwards! ;-)
"please let me in on this one, I want to do one image in NUFLI, just because it is an image I have created that I think will be really good in this new format... I have tested some in drazlace special format but I do not want it to be flickering so I guess NUFLI would be perfect?"
Oh yes, most certainly! 8)
"maybe I can just convert my draz to nufli in a way"
*sigh*.. I wrote it pretty much everywhere, in the GUI, the Readme, the CLI-help - but people still don't seem to know that Mufflon can actually directly import both IFLI and Drazlace files! <:-)
You can even choose to do it in MUIFLI instead, which doesn't have FLIbug-gfx, but which looks pretty much *exactly* like the IFLI, horizontal blur and all, just without any noticeable flickering! ;-)
"I guess there would not be much distortion with that or?"
Probably not. The Drazlaces came out mostly almost perfect in Crest Slide Story (big exception was Pantherpants, because Electric uses all four colors in almost every char!), there was no Drazlace that would require any *major* fixes (i did spend some considerable time on some, but that was only because i wanted it to be 100% perfect! 8)
"Guess that was what you did in the slideshow demo with the new format?"
Well, no, back then mufflon couldn't directly import IFLIs and Drazlaces. And also we didn't have the respective files, just executables! ;-) But in the end the result is the same, it's just a bit more work to capture both frames and turn them into a rasterized version in some painting program with layers, e.g. Photoshop... | User Comment Submitted by DeeKay on 27 May 2011
Whoa! Very nice! I like the style, a bit of the "Heraklion" gradients in there! ;-) Contrary to other people, i actually appreciate both the dithered mountains and the different pixelling techniques, which IMHO generate a very nice contrast - the technicality of the robot has its own, straighforward ditherstyle, which is different from the beautiful oilpainting-like houses. The mountains are the backdrop, so they're being pushed more into the background by choosing the most common ditherstyle (but in a very nice way, it's well pixelled! ;-). | User Comment Submitted by Cobra/Samar on 27 May 2011 User Comment Submitted by JAC on 26 May 2011
Beautiful, threatening and interesting. | User Comment Submitted by Jammer on 26 May 2011
colour usage reminds me a bit of leon's works. the rightmost probe or whatever it is seems a weaker than the rest - it's slightly skewered i don't really buy this stripe-like dithering :) cool one nonetheless ;) | User Comment Submitted by psych on 26 May 2011 User Comment Submitted by Cresh on 26 May 2011 User Comment Submitted by Joe on 25 May 2011 User Comment Submitted by WVL on 25 May 2011
thumbs up from me! :) I really like your work Carrion, so please continue to surprise me like this :D | User Comment Submitted by Hermit on 25 May 2011
Really like this even more after seeing it for the second time. Cartoon for C64 :) the colours on roofs are very unique.
A thought/opinion to previous comment: I'm not a graphician by profession, but I think the image is more exciting with the different techniques mixed as long as the techniques are used in the right places to express textures/emotions. The C64 has limited possibilities and the interest can be kept by tricks & spices (even on music side), and these might differ from expectations of the world outside scene very much...
However the dithered hills in the background are a bit too simple for me, more random/rocky (but still low-contrast) textures would be better IMO...
BTW it's just my opinion from C64 enthusiast perspective, not trying to be smarter than professionals...

I was talking to a online friend and he had some constructive critique that made sense to me, and that I thought you might appreciate. His main comment was that there are 3-4 conflicting styles in the image: the traditional dithering of the mountains, the sky texture, the "line-shading" of the alien, and the painterly technique of the trees/village. Obviously this doesn't ruin the image as a whole, but many designers would say that in general it's best to maintain a consistent style throughout an image, unless there is a definite reason for not doing so... and even then, it should be made clear to the viewer that it was purposely done that way.
Thoughts and perspectives, hope you find some interest in them! | User Comment Submitted by Linus on 25 May 2011 User Comment Submitted by PAL on 25 May 2011
Carrion> wow I must say... it is just incredible, very very nice this is and it brings feelings of a lot of past memories for me just because the palette is so nice in this, it is the c64 palette but not like used befor for me... I must really say WOW! This image is one of the coolest in hires that I have ever seen... so clean and all nice... If I should pick on something it is the mountain range, not because it is bad or anything but just because it is in a slightly different style than the rest in my eyes...

best thing about it is that I dont like it because of the technicals (nufli), but simply because its a gorgeous picture :) | User Comment Submitted by Deev on 24 May 2011 User Comment Submitted by Iapetus/Algarbi/Wood on 24 May 2011 User Comment Submitted by Frantic on 24 May 2011
The glass-like sphere-ish thing on the alien (?) looks a bit out of style in my eyes. Apart from that, a very nice picture, as we have come to expect from Carrion. High quality of course. Not my favorite Carrion picture though.
If I should try to identify some area where there would be room for improvement I'd say that the picture somehow seems to lack light (as opposed to color). Hence, it doesn't capture the feeling of staring straight into the evening sun. The picture, except for the sun itself, rather looks like things do when the sun has just went down, just below the horizon, but in the picture, it is clearly visible over the mountains. This is just details though, as a response to people voting 10 all the time... Overall, the picture is great. | User Comment Submitted by DATA-LAND on 24 May 2011 User Comment Submitted by Brush on 24 May 2011

In my opinion one of the best pictures I have seen. I just wonder if those are really 100% pixeled on a real c64. I assume that it's not. However, an excellet one. Thumbs up! | User Comment Submitted by hedning on 23 May 2011 User Comment Submitted by Wile Coyote on 23 May 2011
I liked the initial impact, the theme, the colours, the hires-ness - then my eyes began to wonder.
The reeds, followed by the buildings impress the most.

fucking inspiration!!! and if not tested (newcomer game), I began to draw! | User Comment Submitted by leonofsgr on 23 May 2011
nice sky, nice grass, nice sun, nice tree, nice river, nice house, nice wtf robot?!, nice carrion! \o/ 10/10 | User Comment Submitted by josepzin on 23 May 2011 User Comment Submitted by STE'86 on 23 May 2011 User Comment Submitted by Medicus on 23 May 2011
What is that thing in the right lower corner? And why is there a pathway going through a river? Greatly pixelled but that looks really odd or perhaps it's just me.. mhhh | User Comment Submitted by saehn on 23 May 2011
Turned out great! If I had one wish regarding this image, it would be to see the whole thing done in the same painterly fashion as the trees... I think they are the most successful part of the whole image. Don't get me wrong, I like it all... but love the trees! :-) I posted your notes from your website here in Production Notes, hope you don't mind. | User Comment Submitted by Sixx on 23 May 2011
Stunning in every way. Nothing else than i ten is a joke. Keep pushing those wonderfull pixels. | User Comment Submitted by Skate on 23 May 2011
very nice details, beautiful nature pixelling. | User Comment Submitted by Yazoo on 23 May 2011
really a nice picture. good job carrion.
everything looks just great (especially trees, house, water, whatever...) the only thing which makes this a 9/10 for me instead of 10/10 may be the mountain(s) in the background. | User Comment Submitted by Stainless Steel on 23 May 2011
Awesome detail. Got a nice hires feeling without the colorclashes. | User Comment Submitted by daison on 23 May 2011 User Comment Submitted by Conjuror on 23 May 2011
Just stunning!
Favorite parts are the houses, they look so rustic, great use of colour on the roofs.
The trees look so natural and the reflection in the river is great.
One of the best I've seen in ages. |
