Though I also do not watch or vote everything of JSL's flood, because neither the motive nor the screenshot appealed to me, the comment flood made me curious.
In my view, it's far from perfect but still pretty okayish JSL stuff. Done in a rush maybe, not what _everyone_ would release, agreed. However, I neither find it terrible enough to preach JSL what ppl preach him twice a year when he's got his overproductive stage again, nor do I understand why you, JSL, still care that much about low votes.
Groundhound day feeling, always the same pointless fuss. | User Comment Submitted by Jammer on 9 September 2014
I assume that discouraging JSL from using black outlines misses the point - they can be his good trademark if he does it right, pay attention to proper anti-aliasing every time and doesn't rush a thing ;) Please notice, that better pictures from his gallery can boast really nice use of this, seemingly, outdated technique. | User Comment Submitted by Scarzix on 9 September 2014
I haven't voted and probarbly won't. But when I look at most of your pictures JSL, I think. Well, nice idea, but if he had put a little more effort into getting it more "smooth". I personally don't like that black cartoonish outline that makes everything so "simple" in structure. it's so 1986 to me. You ought to know better, comming from Amiga and Deluxpaint. When that has been said, I probarbly couldn't draw what you are drawing either. But I can compare your output with what I have already seen. You say you spend some hours on each "painting" ? well, that explains the result. But it still doesn't make you an Oscar. You might have a lucky shot inbetween all your test and trials, but I know a lot of graphicians on C64 spends WEEKS on a single image. Drawing the sketches, perfecting, going back, trying other approaches. Same goes for coders and musicians.
Ofcause, I can make a tune in few hours, but there is no way it would sound as cool as if I spend weeks on fintuning every single note and instrument over and over.
I wonder how your pictures would look, if you forced yourself NOT to use black outlines and tried to copy one of those you say always gets a 10. For me real art is about originality (which you have), details (little things that makes this something extra) and execution/scene (the setup/perspective/motive)
I believe you can do it, but you won't get there as easy as you think.
If you really care about votes (which you shouldn't) then care about those that are PUBLIC visible, and all the anonymous downvoters, forget about them trolls. Have fun with this, do what you like, or if you prefere to get good scores, follow what the audience is requesting... | User Comment Submitted by Mirage on 9 September 2014
Because you didn't read what Jammer said and because you didn't read/understand the link I posted. Simples. | User Comment Submitted by JSL on 9 September 2014
Just wonder why my graphics are worth a 1, and 2, and 3.. I did this year graphics which looked (unreleased) better than this Lara Croft, if I would upload that, I sure get a 1, 2, and 3.. How good it is.. It seems when there is a Top 100 of Best Graphicians, that I score last on Number 100 or so.. :/ | User Comment Submitted by celticdesign on 9 September 2014 User Comment Submitted by Cruzer on 9 September 2014
Someone voted 10 for this? Come on. | User Comment Submitted by chatGPZ on 9 September 2014
that post accurately describes why i am still stuck at making covers, and why it takes me so long to do one that i think is worth releasing. and why all the crap i produced along the way will not find its way to csdb, ever :) | User Comment Submitted by Archmage on 9 September 2014 User Comment Submitted by Yogibear on 8 September 2014 User Comment Submitted by Dr.j on 8 September 2014

become a better painter by painting less
'Whoever said you have to complete a painting at every sitting?
Nobody, as far as I can tell.'
'Your accidents are anything but happy'
'But it also does something else: it frees up time to look'
Happy reading! | User Comment Submitted by JSL on 8 September 2014
Jammer: I know that many of you suggest to finish of any mistakes in my graphics, and realise a better made graphic by spending more time on it but I am too fast in pixeling, and I do a check of the graphic when I am done. A picture doesn't take me 2-3 days but just 3 hours, then a check for the mistakes in it and adjust them. I ask feedback by Email, and mostly Bugjam replies with what can be better or what to leave out. In such pixelweekend, with hardcore pixeling from Friday till Sunday, I come usually with around 8 or more new graphics. That includes double or three screeners or logos. I start mostly around 6am untill midnight, and sometimes even don't sleep to go on whole night, and becoming fucking tired of whole pixeling, that then the week of rest begins. It is crap btw. that I still have pictures unreleased from 2011, showing bad skills. I backup all my graphics on usb stick, and is on two pc's. And with the amount of idea's I try to google during the week and pixeling about 8 graphics, you must know that my folder is atm over 520 c64 pictures... It grew and grew... | User Comment Submitted by JSL on 8 September 2014
I pixel for Enjoyment. And maybe I shouldn't care what people think or do vote. The people getting the first previews in their email from each pixelweekend I am having, reply with positive answer back on how much they like my graphics. I keep going with c64 as I like it, alltough my wish is to do Amiga again, my A1200 died a long while back, and enjoyed much doing gfx and animations with Dpaint5AGA. I know there is Cloanto's Amiga Forever, but Personal Paint wasn't quite the thing like Dpaint5, and I never got the ADF file working on Amiga Forever. I restarted c64 scene in 2000 where I was in Black Code Design and Zapotek got me into Axelerate on the c64, now 14 years later still doing c64 pixels.. | User Comment Submitted by Jammer on 8 September 2014
I strongly suggest an experiment - try to devote whole week for one picture. Let's stick to one-screener as a starter ;) First, do it your style and finish it to the point you always do. I guess that would take two or three days at most. Then each subsequent day, find things and aspects that bother you in your creation or you just don't like them any more. Correct those things gradually but don't force yourself to do so - treat it as a relaxing exercise. I'm really curious of the outcome. | User Comment Submitted by JSL on 8 September 2014
You're completly right. Maybe I sound too negative about Leon, but I just took his graphics as example for getting the heaps of 10's for just "colors". To others awesome c64 Art but I prefer other Leon works more, where much to see is. Nothing against Leon himself, I have respect that he keeps producing new Art. | User Comment Submitted by The Phantom on 8 September 2014
JSl. Who cares what others think? Do you draw for the enjoyment, or do you draw to get rankings?
I personally don't care for the voting system and have just recently started using it, not for my benefit, but others, like you, rely on it.
I draw because I totally enjoy it. I release because I do like the comments, I love hearing what others think of my work. It helps me understand areas that I need to improve and for the record, you cannot please everyone.
While I don't like ALL the work Leon, Joe or Pal do, they have learned what the people like. Take Leons work for instance, he uses the same brush style in all his works. It's something others wouldn't notice, but I do.
Your work has the same flaws we've been telling you about for years, but each time we tell you, you lose control. I don't like being told stuff either man, I really don't, but you seriously can't have one without the other.
I've said it before, I used to admire your work, but your attitude ruined that for me.
If you can't take a comment or vote in stride, you shouldn't be releasing PUBLICLY at all, right? | User Comment Submitted by Jammer on 8 September 2014
JSL, don't worry and just be yourself. You have some skills and experience but apparently no sense that tells you what's art and what's not. Comparing with Leon's works is slightly out of place - believe me, he puts a lot more effort into final product and it can be seen whatever he paints. Sure, he has sometimes problems with anatomy, perspective etc. but his signature style, consequent pallette and texture are always making his works. But it doesn't matter - your style is also recognizable and that's the most important. Besides I don't think it's ok to draw him dozen of kittens first and then use as an object of your grief ;) | User Comment Submitted by Mermaid on 8 September 2014
Johan, I know it sucks to get negative feedback, but try not to worry too much about the votes. Try to remember that many people like your pictures, and that you make those people happy when they see a new release from you. Focus on the positive. I often find something that I like in your pictures, like the cute little mouse and the statue head in this one, for instance (or the neat trees in "They"). | User Comment Submitted by JSL on 8 September 2014
There are other graphicians, even badlier than me, getting better votes, and on most gfx I get downvotes. It has to be Quality nowadays.. Even some images from Leon: Do score heaps of 10's, when his style is to put one object in the screen, and fill the whole area with just colors, like his recently released 'Boat' graphic. Usually I pixel stuff, and add backgrounds. Maybe it is also because who I am, that I get downvotes. Even when I would come with a girl holding an umbrella, with lots of colours around her, I would get a straight 1. I am not going to copy Leon, but I said lately to Yogibear, if I would come with a picture like one of Leon's, I get downvotes, but if Leon came with this idea, he gets 10's. Leon has another style of pixeling, and is better than me, but voting 10's on just a sillhouet of a girl with umbrella and heaps of colors... I hope I don't start drama with this comment. :D | User Comment Submitted by iAN CooG on 8 September 2014
you are confusing quantity with quality. | User Comment Submitted by JSL on 8 September 2014
I don't want to feed the trolls, but if this would be a five-screener, I still would get an overall score of 3.3, it seems the hard work involved in pixeling, isn't apreciated by you guys, thats why it scores a 3.3 right now. I am not Leon who gets everytime dozens of 10's, even while also he has some pictures that are too simple, but still get 10's enough.. I still have flaws in graphics, but I am guessing that the last years everything needs to be perfect, and that I must call myself Leon, Mermaid, Joe, Mirage etc. ;) | User Comment Submitted by Mermaid on 8 September 2014
I like the little mouse sitting on one of the rocks in the waterfall! | User Comment Submitted by JSL on 8 September 2014
