Fantastic release! Really nice to see such a gem appeared on Commodores too.
Next to the game also I have to tell (as an amateur graphician), STE made a fantastic job again! That title screen itself could go for a compo... Just check out and compare to Spectrum or other versions. Wow!
I hope the Plus/4 version once will have the same (or even better palette :-) ) version of this title screen. Eyecandy!

All the big hitting routines are optimised. The optimisations are mainly rolled out and self modified code. But the integrity and flow of the original Z80 code is maintained. That’s where it gets its speed from.
Knight Lore & Pentagram share a lot of code. Night Shade less so but Gunfright does share a lot of code with Night Shade so a faster version of Night Shade based on our Gunfright conversion is possible but I doubt we’ll ever look at that one. | User Comment Submitted by Stakker on 22 October 2018
Wow, this is incredible! As I'm both a C64 and MSX user, this truly warms my heart :-) Ultimate games have a very special feel to them, which I still love.

Knight Lore C64, full Z80 conversion is now available for download.
Many thanks to Mariusz for the Re-Complier, optimisations and help. Saul for the music and STE for the loading screen picture.
This is I believe the first, full Z80 to 6502 conversion of Knight Lore and includes all of the features from the original Spectrum game (plus a few more!)
The performance of the game is very good and in line with the other 8 bit versions released in the 80’s and faster than some of them…For example, compared to the Amstrad version this version is faster in all the screens I tested (busy and non-busy). It’s faster than the BBC B version in a lot of the busy screens and slightly faster than the Spectrum & MSX versions in the non-busy screens. It does slow down a bit in the busy screens but all the other version do as well. Play it on a C128 in C64 mode and it’s fastest of them all.
To help to even out the speed difference between the busy and non-busy screens there is an option to Lock the Maximum Game Speed (FPS) in the Setting & Cheat Screen in the Front End. (This option won’t slow down the busy screens at all on a stock machine). It will default to On if an accelerated machine is detected. It will also default to On if a C128 has been detected (The C128 version was running too fast for the sound fx to keep up!). There are a number of different speeds that can be selected or it can be switched off altogether.
All the instructions including controls details are in the View Instructions & Info Screens option on the front end title screen.
