Isn't there some gfx format that allows for 'animations'? That would allow showing the full 'magic' of vice full borders vs the actual HW.

Krill: My point being: If it's added as a C64 One-File demo, the screenshot should reflect what's seen on a C64. If the screenshot stays, the release should be sorted under Related or Other Platform Release. :)

hehe. this was made with a capturing device, and the pic only shows the luma signal (and obviously a bit more than one frame).

hedning: No, not at all. Please re-read everything, closely, and run it on realthing yourself.
If anything, there should be either a real screenshot from realthing, or from VICE in full border mode rather than debug border mode.
If your C-64 (or monitor) shows such a horribly out-of-sync b&w picture, fix it.

Walt: Yes, and i was convinced myself in the end by Cruzer and others and luckily did not meet any objection from VICE team. =)

Groepaz: So that should be the actual screenshot then, at least as long the entry is sorted under "C64 One-File Demo". As it is now it's more of a Other Platform thing, or "Related release", I would say. Said that: Great stuff!

@Digger, take look at this. This shows a black and white video signal, but the timing is the same for color or svideo. The debug borders in vice creates a video frame like the whole 64us of this line had the visual picture information

@Digger. This demo uses more screen space than a real C64 draws. There are additional cycles per line that are not visible in the video singla, if you look on osciloscope you have 4.7us of hsync, then few more us of color burst and only then you get the real video signal. And it doesn't last for the whole time one line takes anyway. In VICE there's an option to display "debug border" which is like a virtual c64 screen where every single cycle on a line has real graphics. I don't know how to explain this better, hope it makes sence

Tears of joy over my face! I remember I had a monitor that had H/V-sync dials, but I doubt it would allow to offset that much in X...
Anyway, it feels like 2020 is the time C64 finally deserves 16:9 resolution, ain't it?

How is the C64 video signal cropped to 4:3 anyway? Can this be lifted?

@krill, enthusi: On a real setup you can use the dials on your 1084s to adjust amount of visible gfx. I see no reason why this behaviour and usage shouldn't be emulated with VICE. :D Perferably using USB-dials to do the changes if I may feature creap a bit. ;)

I don't see the point. You want to do fancy border effects, then switch on full borders and do it. Otherwise, resort to normal VICE borders. Anything in between is nonsense, as well as more borders than you see on any C64 setup.

Hmm ok, i am slowly getting convinced to add that option. So the VIC-II settings dialogue will contain a radio button group where you can choose between "Normal Borders", "Full Borders", and "Debug Borders". :)

This is a really cool looking screen. I wish a real C64 had this kind of resolution, though having the main window be tiny and on the right would not be nice most of the times hehe.
SPOILER HOW ITS DONE:
More than 4 sprites on the border because you don't open the border on badlines, the font has 2 blank top pixels. The top logo is a normal multicolor in a border with just 4 sprites, that's why it's "only" 416 or so pixels wide
