@Color Bar, yes! I'm not quite following your colour assignment, but as long as the chars have access to the d020 colour then your plan should work (would have to be all of them, otherwise there would be a colour change each time a character intersects the fake border)

I guess a wide left border could also be simulated with a multicolor font? If $d020 and $d021 are the same, you can cover the screen background color with one of the multicolors. You soft scroll the text 2 pixels at a time with $d016, and clear the part of the leftmost character that it shifted onto the "border".
