Wow, this is such a great demo; very striking design and inventive sound.

I returned to this demo today, as so many times before. Very much thanks to the soundtrack by Randall, which I love. That track is called "purple or silver". Noticed a lot of other things, which still stand out, mentioning the antialiased line-vector for one.
This one is a keeper, created in 2012, keeps on!

*As always* the very good things don't bring it to the top... like the videocassette standards in the 80s.
So this is so freaking different to all those great 2-sided megademos!
And for my own special off-the-tops livestyle (because mainstream sucks) this one is truly brilliant in arts, style, gfx and very much in music.
Please continiue this way of making demos: not fuck for fame but arts for peace! <3

I have returned to this one over the past few days of demo watching mayhem. It has some rare qualities and a depth to it that really intrigues me. I will never not greet Arise. ;)

I see myself boot this one up quite regularly, really really like it a lot and it doesnt grow old. coherent design, superb soundtrack, excellent code, originality, flow, its got it all. maybe the only the pic-on-pic effect on side 2 takes too long...

Arise #1

/me wants Biba #4!

Simple logic HCL against demagoguery big daddy. Big daddy learns how to understand the world of sheep. Do you miss the pedestal or pulpit big daddy.

Very different, highly original style of graphic art and effects. I loved every moment of it.
What came walking after the paper boats made me laugh so hard. XD
I loved lots of the effects you guys showed, which I've never seen before and appear to be highly original and innovative.

I don't care where a group is from; a great demo is a great demo; period. And this one is among the best imo.

Just watched this on real C64 and 1084... would like to say big respect to the Arise gang!

I can understand HCL's point though... I do get the impression that you have to be in so called "bigger groups" to get more pat-on-the-back... then again, what the fuck do I know? To me, Arise is in the top 5 of my favorite C64 demo groups, no matter what others think. It's all to do with your own style and themes!

HCL wrote: "It is ridiculous to see people cheering certain demo(s) from the same compo, with clearly less content and innovation, just by the fact that they return to the scene after X number of years, or perhaps are from a certain country."
- I think any return to the scene deserves a big cheer. For example I would cheer big time for a new Ikari intro from the guys.. In these cases I think it's really not about the demo(s) and I see nothing ridiculous in it.

man, i wish i would have some strong "black" (well, i don't like the word nigga) music skillz for making those uber-funky-groovy tunes... :-)
at least it is "downvoting" as there are much to less votes here in csdb.
so a few, aehmmm, "racism" (or is something about being jealously) votes allow such a strong down rating.
at least you shouldn't care... but from heart, i am still in hope that the voting system will be changed here.

"[...]that all flavours of demos are welcome on the scene. He didn't mean *religion* explicitly (or did you?)."
no - but i didnt refer to demos either, but the people making them and discriminating them because of what they are. and i can only repeat: i have not seen this at demo parties. we have all kinds of nations, religions, colors and cultures mixed up in one room for a weekend and the only time someone gets hurt is when he is too drunk to walk =)

"This is all just for fun anyway, so how can anyone bother if i vote a little bit up on these guys that i know and vote a little bit down on those from strangewhere?"
i just refuse to believe that there is a majority voting with this kind of motivation behind it. yes sure, i am more likely to vote *at all* if some guy who i know points me to an entry of something he just released. yes i didnt vote for all X demos either. does that make me a racist? i hope not /o\

PS: and i have developed an antipathy against scroller-logo-press-space and i am not ashamed to admit that i am guilty of "downvoting" (whatever that is) some of them. so what? i am sure there are others who have "downvoted" artphosis because there is not enough hardcore code and the slow pace makes them fall asleep, so what? its their fucking right damnit :)

@Magnar: Sorry i was unclear, and i didn't put enough smileys to make everyone understand where is irony and not.

The religion-reasoning was just continuing Groepaz's theory that all flavours of demos are welcome on the scene. He didn't mean *religion* explicitly (or did you?).

..and i don't think i have more superskills than anyone else, i used too few smileys.

But i still think we are too blind to see the racism because it is comfortable. This is all just for fun anyway, so how can anyone bother if i vote a little bit up on these guys that i know and vote a little bit down on those from strangewhere? BoozeDesign gain from this kind of voting as well probably, so i should just be happy and stfu.

HCL wrote, "Yes, we have nigga-demos and we have jewish demos, but we only vote for the christian demos, that's my point."

HCL, I'm not sure if I understand where you want to come with your current reasoning. I cannot believe people vote on demos at parties or here on csdb based on religion.

My view is that people vote on what visuals and audio concepts that brings a creative excitment and positive impression on the viewer when watching it.
Further on, I personally do not think good visuals and audio concepts necessary comes from the most complex and/or "world-record breaking" coding.
I strongly believe that the overall impression of design, audio, graphics, coding and the feel of the product is what people will vote for.

HCL wrote, "You don't have to have superskills like me to see that"

Bragging about having superskills is a dangerous thing to do, HCL. We are all skilled in different ways, and pointing yourself as "above everyone" with having superskills just amazes me. Sorry to say, in a very negative way..

fair voting means: everyone gets a 1 =)
User Comment
Submitted by HCL on 14 January 2013
..of course i have to go a little "over the top" to get any reaction, but i still mean what i wrote. You can not blame the voting here on csdb on party drunkness. Yes, we have nigga-demos and we have jewish demos, but we only vote for the christian demos, that's my point. You don't have to have superskills like me to see that, you can just click "Top Demos" and count the number of nigga-demos there and reconsider if it's really fair.

"The result from the X12 demo compo displays the obvious.. if you want to compete, you should be in a group from Germany, Sweden, Netherlands etc.. and not from Poland, Hungary or beyond. This underlying scene racism is something we should all take more seriously imo."
that sounds a *bit* over the top really. (reminds me of this "nordic conspiration" regarding scene.org awards =P) its also the first time i hear this concern (infact one thing i hear all the time as a partyorganizer is that unlike with other similar events, racism is non existant on scene parties. we *literally* see retarded black jewish nazi niggers making demos with each other =P)

IMHO the results are just the unfortunate (for some :)) consequence of late night voting and would have looked radically different otherwise. (personally i am very curious about how many people actually voted for that matter)

From my side it's more matter of style but of country. This one appears to me quite colorless and the music is not more than a bit underlining. It might be great from the technical side which I cannot judge, or a great piece of modern art, but I don't like modern art. Maybe I'm just yesterdayish. A ranking of 8.8 is nothing to complain in my eyes. A great demo has to have it all: Great music, great graphics and stunning effects. This one lacks on the graphical side and even more on the music. The only effect I kept in mind till the end is the glass with the cube. From my personal entertainment view this is not more than a 7.

HCL, sadly but you're right. Thanks your words. We know and feel this on our skin. Just look at our group ranking on CSDB after 17 years continuous activity and more winner demos. Four votes. :(
Biba 3 should have been in the top 3! Very good product.

Gotta say it again.. this demo deserved a higher rank in that compo, and also deserves a higher rank here on csdb. It is ridiculous to see people cheering certain demo(s) from the same compo, with clearly less content and innovation, just by the fact that they return to the scene after X number of years, or perhaps are from a certain country.

The result from the X12 demo compo displays the obvious.. if you want to compete, you should be in a group from Germany, Sweden, Netherlands etc.. and not from Poland, Hungary or beyond. This underlying scene racism is something we should all take more seriously imo. I have seen it over more than a decade now, and it doesn't seem to change over time. Feels like enough frustration to write a comment :P.

Music was a bit of a disappointment, more psycho tunes by Wacek!

INSANE...

I watched Protogeo first from the x2012 demos and couldn't believe it did not end up in the top 3. Then I watched Wonderland XI and could not believe it did not win. Then it dauned on me:
NEVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE C64, SO MANY GREAT DEMOS WERE RELEASED ON ONE DAY!
Not the 80s, not in the 90s - no, 2012 has marked the year of the coolest releases. Who would have thought?

Biba 1&2 were two of my favourite demos ever, and seeing Biba 3 was quite a blow, too. Some of the effects are f*cking fantastic and this time the demo is also carefully styled, almost themed throughout the whole presentation. Great stuff! And thanks for the only decent directory design from x2012 ;)
Biba in a wine glass?

And especially cool to see Fenek and Luke back in full action!
eLBAN, what's up with your jump'n'run?

this is a really good demo! most gfx are very good, the designconcept is very well done, and most effects look really good. just some of them could even kick more ass if they would be a little smoother - but thats complaining on an extremely high level!
both thumbs up from me.

this probably ended up too low in the results.

Terribly underestimated!!! Omg, can't believe it, #8 is a joke. Ok, i still haven't seen #3-5 in the compo and i wasn't present at the party, but this demo deserves higher ranking imo.

I love the design and the many hires-elements. Bobs and vector effects that i wish i had made myself. Interesting music and everything. Gotta love it!

Love the soundtrack too, fits the demo like a perfect glove.

extra points for the dirart!

edit:
also, the in memoriam for Toush (rip) was the most beautiful I've ever seen. Proper dedication to a lost friend.

Submitted by wacek on 28 October 2012
@Bordeaux, your comment is kinda important, because it made me realize that cultural differences between us go deeper that I assumed.

I think you might have missed the point of the demo completely. If "Biba 1" was an unadulturated praise on boozing, and "Biba 2" was about hmm, other hedonistic enjoyments ;) - this third installment is about something else. There is a Slavic tradition of honouring the loved ones who passed away with a social, celebratory gathering ("party" if you wish) which includes both food and drinking. We call it "konsolacja", I think a "wake" is a closest English equivalent. From psychological perspective, it is a passage, a milestone which helps to deal with loss. And that is the meaning of "Biba 3", which is (quite obviously, I assumed) emphasized with the dandelion allegory.

My view is that you DON'T have to be drunk to appreciate or respect that. As long as you understand.
