At a time when the c64 scene meant everything to me, one day I ended up with this disk in my drive. It has ruled my world. In every aspect, this demo was superior to anything else I've ever seen before and what I would be seeing for the remainder of my active scene career. This demo is not legend. This demo is god. If I voted less than 10 for this demo I would spit on my entire youth and everything I've ever loved when I was young. This, and nothing else, is the one.

I think the noter for this demo is vastly underappreciated! Did anyone else notice a sexy windowing system FOR THE DEMO NOTER FFS with possibly one of Reyn's all time best tunes in it?! Just saying...

That's my favourite demo. One of the first ones i got from Count Zero in late 91 after being in scene just half a year. Musics and Gfx were great at that time. Still awesome.

Indeed, Hein is awsesome. And he is not bad when it comes to graphics either, unlike some people.

I remember working on that first bit with the flames and the small logo, together with Orc, Not sure it made it into the final version. Anything else I did was ignored.
I quickly found out BML were a bunch of arrogant bastards (pardon my french). That was before I met Hein, by the way.

(ignore my previous comment, we were drunk on irc, and I thought a stupid negative comment would entice ppl to upvote and get this in the all time top 10, where it belongs).

still unsurpassed demo in terms of flow, soundtrack and gfx. I want another BML demo!

I initially missed this demo due to me going to Amiga in late 1991.

Then, when I joined Xenon after my comeback in 1993, Oxbow and Spectator were discussing this demo and I was like... Wot?

So when I finally saw it, some +2 years after it had been released, this demo still blew me away. I remember regretting my Amiga move and being frustrated I couldn't have picked a worse time to leave the c64 scene back then, just before the release of this...

Top notch!!!! Just fabulous.

When you do, joystick is apparently read as having all directions + fire activated. Some emulators support this, seemingly *just* to get this demo to work beyond that part of the demo.

And I agree: tijd voor een nieuw product uit Nederland!

Maybe technically unimpressive according to today's standards, but the graphics and music are second to none. The pixels and SID in this release are gorgeous.

Oh btw... I got stuck at the "soft and wet" part so I had to google. Seems you have to wet your finger and rub port 1 with it to move to the next part. Crazy! I don't know how they coded that in lol, but it somehow 'shortcuts' port 1?

Jongens kom terug en maak er nog eentje! Dit is te lekker om te laten liggen. ;)

And of course it will run all day here on the 22nd this year - like every year!

I like some pretty messed up sounds, both on the SID and on my MP3 player, but since I first saw this demo back in 1993, I've always come back to that tune in the final part. Really lovely piece of music, one of the best end part tunes ever!

I guess I'll try my other three units then... two down three to go. I thought it was perhaps a diskdrive problem...
None of them has crashed at the dragon scroller though.

1541U-II with 1541 rom on breadbin C64 took me all the way past elite scroller but then it's all black, doesn't seem I will be getting further than that tonight.

Tried it on two C64, two C64C and a C64G from both 1541U-II and 1541-II, none of them worked past the elite scroller. Bad demo or is all my equipment crap? What do you need to make it work? Are the disk images presented here OK?
User Comment
Submitted by algorithm on 22 February 2011
This is because the intro sequence (with the dragon) uses VSP which can cause some c64's to crash (as well as the other parts such as the Elite scroller, ode to artists (AGSP) and the music selector part with the moving logo

Submitted by e5frog on 22 February 2011
Can't seem to load this completely with a 1541U-II, neither from a bare C64C with a 1541-II drive... :-(
Both crashes on the first side, any special stuff needed to run this for real - runs fine in VICE.

Also won't run on a breadbin C64 with 1541-II, not 100% sure that the disk was written OK but there's rarely problems.

We wait for this demo for 2.5 years or so...

The guys in Atlantis made a fun intro for their Immortal Flash #12 and changed the directory so that people thought it was the demo. They must have planned this in 1991 as the mag didn't make it until 1992.

The thing were, when this demo were released we all, and I meen all of the scene were waiting for it... And man we were so happy when it came and we were even more happy when we had seen it over and over again that first day... because it were a very stylish demo at that time... and it were not like 7900000 dycps and so on... it vere simple, big stuff, quite bald and grand and had alot of colors that were not that commen at the time with such nice images... remember that fli were really new. I remember yup coded a fli thing that I saw and dreamed about how to create graphics for, but blackmail in a way with the elite font proved that it were better with a concept rather than just swamp alot of colours in there...

Well anyway... thank hein and blackmail... the day I got this in the mail from you dudes were a very good day in my life!

Man we had waited for this demo a long time... that is why we in offence used the slogan "Offence - faster than blackmail" in some of our discimages, because we were clever but layzy or slow too... he he...

To me the flip the flopp or disk part and the wet your finger and let her have it part(a massive show of creative power to me, to use the odd signals from the joyport... with a competition pro it were not responding... genious and so simple and effective!) were worth the long wait alone!

Shadow, let's not start this again. ;) First time I saw Dutch Breeze when it was released I was seriously impressed. As were many others. It was the refreshing way of doing a demo. Design.

I see this demo come up a lot in the "best demo EVAR!!?"-discussion that have cropped up now with the release of EoD.

I must say that back when it was released, it really didn't have an impact on me that would signify a major milestone. Sure, it had some great gfx, but the pacing was slow and there wasn't much in the way of effects.
I just rewatched it, and I can't say that my opinion has changed much. A nice demo, but no contender for top demo of all time for sure.

Of course it's possible to rate yesterday's demos using todays standards. It's called progress, and I'm glad a lot has happened to demos since this ruled the scene! Still a pretty good demo though.

There's dragons, naked girls, swords, a cow, muddy rocks, air/beach logo, planets, stars, Elite font. There's nothing missing, all ingredients to please the scene at that time. But, when I look back at it, it surely looks outdated and oldfashioned. Codewise it's better than it seems, the routines were used to serve the overall design, which was a refreshing way of making a demo.

Comparing demos like this with more recent ones and saying "ooh but lookie teh new demo has all teh shiny blinky blinky things" is rather brainless.

Its like comparing a 1964 Ford Mustang with a car built in 2007.

The new car may have all the shiny bling bling but in the end, the mustang is the undisputed king.

I am a newbie to C64 scene and I know how hard it is to achieve the wanted effects nowadays on a PC using an emu, working on a demo part for months during spare time....to all newbies: image having just your C64 and nothing else: no emu, no Excel, no gfx converter, no nothing but your C64. Think about it and consider when this demo was done and with what tools!!!

Clearly there seems to be a complete lack of understanding of these classic demos by some of the younger people in the scene.

I understand that if your knowledge of the demoscene spans no more than the past couple of years, you might not be able to appreciate nor comprehense the meaning of these milestones of c64 history.

Anyone complaining about the quality of the graphics or effects in this demo should seriously consider what they were doing back in 1991. Attending kindergarten? Releasing demos with megadycps, dysps, or rastersplits? (I know I did that kind of things back then...)

This demo stands out in so many ways. The music is better than pretty much 100% of what's made today, and while there are artwork made now that definitely beats the artwork in this one, nothing did at the time.

The C64-demoscene finest hours, for sure.

Anyone not giving a straight 10 should be tarred and feathered...
Legendary Pixelwork, the bestestest music ever in any single demo, awesome design, good code. Innovative: Mix-e-load = sheer bliss (Why has NOBODY ever done anything similar again?) and let's not forget the "finger Joyport" part, what a fuckin hoot that was...
I think i've watched this demo alteast 40 times, probably more often than some demos i worked on myself.....

Was often announced ... And then ! Then finally the release.
Outstanding gfx and music...
Was a killer at it´s time and will ever be remembered .
Yeah i share the comment Oswald gives with comparing the standarts...
That is the problem when releasing it it was outstanding.
There is no math hardcore in ,sure but that wasn´t the standart at this time and hey when u will see Pc stuff in 10 years or so the standart from 2day is even dawn "out".
