Brataccas: Thanks for the feedback. As for the atmosphere, I just wish I had been able to include the right sound effects and music at key animation points. Specifically, A - when the Hangman takes your points away, B - the opening and closing of the main gate, C - the freedom / back to jail at the conclusion. All are demanding the right accompaniment. Oh well, that's where version 1.1 would have come in. | User Comment Submitted by Brataccas on 30 July 2015
Hazardous: I always enjoyed Run magazine, but for this review, they missed the mark. There's something about the atmosphere in Hangman's Hazard that that's makes it unique and very appealing. Those other Wheel of Fortune games don't have nearly the same draw 30 years on.. a casual-friendly game with a dark theme is something to be treasured. | User Comment Submitted by Hazardous on 28 July 2015
Greetings from the creator of Hangman's Hazard.
I am blown away that someone (thanks TRIAD!) would take the time to resurrect this game. My own C64 equipment has been MIA or non-functional for a long, long time. I wondered if the original disks were even readable, or if I would ever see the little Hangman again. And I could never show anyone my work except for the pictures on the packaging.
FWIW, the game was reviewed in Run magazine and received a B-, but the comments were bone-headed and outright dishonest.
The reviewer - John Ryan - insisted that on the main game screen, the graphics quality "slipped several notches", when the truth is that working within the limitations of the C64's resolution, I sought to design the most playable across-the-room game possible. I tested the game in bars and other public places and I KNOW that it works. The large letters of the puzzle board, the huge timer, the bigger-than-default-size used letters, all combine to allow the players to spread out in their living room instead of sardining in front of the monitor. You can even see this now by way of emulation on a laptop HDMI'd to your main TV.
However, the reviewer insisted that the graphics were "not dissimilar to many PD games" he had seen. Total bull, and today all you have to do is go to Gamebase64, search for all games starting with "hang", and let your eyeballs determine the truth. And IMAGINE, many of those lame versions were actually commercial releases.
In his conclusion, determined to be snarky, Mr. Ryan ended with 2 more low blows.
"With over 3000 word puzzles, it's more likely you'll run out of interest before you run out of challenges."
Hey guy, ever hear of Poker, Chess, or Monopoly? Those games provide a medium to facilitate competition with your friends. If you like that kind of game, you don't run out of interest. You and your friends, along with the game, PROVIDE the interest. And 3,000 different puzzles, flagged to not repeat until all have been used, is a very important value to people to people who actually enjoy a hangman / wheel of fortune type game.
"You can download similar games from any bulletin board system, free of charge".
Funny how he didn't back up that assertion with at least one example. It's tempting to go all John McEnroe on him here. "The NAME of the SIMILAR GAME... JERK!"
Alright, sorry for the rant, but by way of contrast, it reveals how much I appreciate the comments and ratings here from obviously BRIGHT people who are intimately acquainted with the limitations of the C64. Thanks, folks.
OTOH, at least a reviewer in a Canadian C64 users group mag called it "The one that tops all the others!" Much more like it.
Finally, to appreciate Hangman's Hazard, you need to find a group of people who enjoy this class of game and have competitive egos, who want to prove that they are the quickest and the slickest. Then have them play all these public domain versions of Hangman, try out the boring Wheel of Fortune First Edition, and then HH. London to an f'n brick they'll prefer my game. | User Comment Submitted by Joe on 23 June 2015
