Fantastic tool for preserving turbo tape games/utils to modern mass-storage devices.
It would be great to do opposite way too! Any chance to do that?
For this purpose, I use ancient program from 1985. called Copy 235.

Yes, it's an idea which has one basic flaw: since the buffer is below $0400 and main data starts at $0801, the dump would either start with the buffer and contain screen dump $0400-07e7 (not very elegant when loading later) or would have to be in two separate files (buffer dump and main data - also not very elegant) ;)

So, since there is a limited amount of those protectors around, it would be more elegant (yes, I know I am using this word a lot here) to detect that the protected file has been loaded (by checking the sysline specifics), deprotect and then dump. Which is my idea that I would like to try to implement in the future versions...

Ah, so basically it's utilizing the fact that the tape buffer gets loaded along with the main data. Maybe this program should just have an option to dump both the header block and main data together?

This is an example of the simple protection, you just do the
.T 0390 03f6 0800
in the monitor before saving to unprotect. Other protections included encryption and were a little bit harder to unprotect.

Sure ;)

The file 'waldico26a.tap' is the original tape image. The first file is then saved to 'illegal copy.tap' which shows the described effect.

wacek: do you have an example? (e.g .tap)

Xiny6581: I mean protections like Micrus Copy or Tape Protector by Jumbo/Parados. Those were the ones mostly used in Poland in the early 90s by the so called "computer market" pirates/importers (that is a whole history thing in Poland, many of the later famous groups started at those "computer markets").

They protections were based in most cases on putting some additional bytes in the header, which ended up above $0300, then upon RUN they were either moved to $0800 or used for some decoding. If you loaded a program protected by that one, and saved it back to another tape by <-S or turbo save, those were of course discarded and when loading back such a copy, the protector would either crash or show some "illegal copy" message.

Awesome work Sailor! Thanks! ;)

I am so happy after my fixes you pushed this tool forward again. Next stop: deprotecting turbo tapes! ;)

Btw. as for today, I have dumped 1150 tapes with different versions of this tool.

Jiffydos does not have taperoutines and calling kernal to print "PRESS PLAY ON TAPE" will cause a crash. This is the reason sdt2d dies with jiffydos. It might change in the future tho :)

Tom-Cat:
No worries, I have tried on:
SpeedDosV3, Exos, Fastload, JiffyDOS; they all went bonkers. Soon I will try on DolphinDOS3, when my hardware arrives.
It's just very interesting to get feedback and hear experiences. :)

Hmm, you are right, I just tried it with Jiffy and U2 and it goes to READY prompt when you start it. This was years ago, it was either some other program or I was wrong about jiffy. Sorry :(

TomCat: Did you get Spectacular Copy to work with Jiffydos? How and what version did you have?
See, I tried this but the load-routine seem to not work for me.
Need feedback :)

Tao: I know dude did that ride when beta testing, just wanted to point out so no one else has to go through the issues. You see, sometimes it *can* work but the files don't save correctly. They save from $0801-> filelength. But write to $FFFE- filelength. and Gives no error. I mean it would be quite frustrating to fill up a disk and then realize it's not been done correctly? :)

Just install JiffyDOS in your C64 and your drive (1541, 1581,...). SD2IEC of course supports it too. Spectacular Copy works just fine with it and saves very fast with it. With SD2IEC you don't have to worry about running out of space or filenames (make sure SD2IEC creates .P00 files by default).

@Tao: Of course, but 1581 fastsave would be nice as well, wouldn't it? :)

@Xiny6581: "Oh one notice, fastsave won't work with 1581 device."

This *might* be why both the Summary and the first comment says:

"Version 1.2 is equipped with a 1541 fastsave I/O routine."

What the hell is a turbo tape?

I beta tested this version with 30 tapes.
Most of the tests were performed non-stop. Feed it with tapes, saved to floppy. Not a single freeze or error in the fastload/fastsave.
Oh one notice, fastsave won't work with 1581 device.
