Believe it or not but each of those “sprites” is actually 2 sprites... multicolour underlay plus a black outline. That’s the reason that they y-movement isn’t a fully smooth sinus - in order to keep the number of sprites per line at 4 or below we had to go for a “dampened triangular wave”.

When I made the colour cycler, I felt sure that someone would’ve done this style before... it’s too obvious and easy to do... and, yeah, it turns out that Bob did it better in Bla Bla (his used 2 frames for the bitmap and extended the colours out to the full screen).. that said, I’m not sure that would be possible with an all-border DYSP on top ;-)

The part was originally intended for a future X demo - but as the scroller was so hard to read.............
