The C64 Pic Extender is a multi-platform (Windows, Linux, macOS) cross-development tool used to augment Multicolor and PETSCII pictures for the Commodore 64 by adding sprites in the left and right borders of the visible screen.
By design, to keep its workflow simple and intuitive, the C64 Pic Extender is not itself an editor for drawing augmented artwork directly. In fact, artists are welcome to use their favourite editors to get the most out of their creative process.

Individual sprite colors can be set on a per-sprite basis with just two exceptions, due to bad lines. In fact, there are no demo-style nearly-whole-RAM-consuming tricks at play here.
You might want to have a look at one of the award-winning artworks that were augmented with the help of the C64 Pic Extender: "Love from Sweden" by The Sarge (also appearing in the screenshot of this release).

The technical details, in a nutshell, are:

- 2 whole columns of sprites in each side-border, for a total of 96 extra pixels (48 fat pixels) that get the total image width to 416 pixels (208 fat pixels),
- no glitches and no bugs in any of the sprites all the way to the external edges (try Debug borders in VICE's C64 emulator), and
- the supporting code is stable on PAL and NTSC machines.

Designs can be saved to a project file and progressed at a later time. A project can be exported to an executable PRG file, that:

- is compressed with Exomizer,
- includes a bit of support code for smoothing video transitions and disabling the restore key, and
- optionally includes a transition effect to highlight the use of sprites in the side-borders.

A project can also be exported to a PNG image, handy for being used as a screenshot e.g. when uploading a release here on CSDb.

More pre-set layouts are being worked at, including: mixed hires and multicolor sprites, x-expanded sprites, and overlapping sprites. Development updates will be published on my blog under https://luigidifraia.wordpress.com/tag/pic-extender/
