Even after watching some of the other stuff of Mermaid, this one remains my favourite. | User Comment Submitted by Jak T Rip on 7 May 2008
and again one of those pictures that look like a part of a nice computer game. | User Comment Submitted by DeeKay on 3 March 2008
Magnificent. Yet again, Mermaid proves to be a "Jane of all trades" by doing a picture in a pixelstyle and setting that is quite different to the stuff she did before! ;-) | User Comment Submitted by Zyron on 25 February 2008
Yes, this one rocks. Nice mushrooms too. | User Comment Submitted by null on 25 February 2008
Although leon's pic is also very good, I like this one more. why? because leon's pic is interlaced, while this is plain multicolour... and I just like vanja's style a lot :_) | User Comment Submitted by Tim on 25 February 2008
hehe :) thanks for explaining Vanja! excellent decription which leaves me guessing ;) | User Comment Submitted by Mermaid on 25 February 2008
Quoting BordeauxThe choice of the brown filling besides the left eye of the left skull-on-the-stick seems wrong as if the skull is transparent to the stick. And ditto question for the brown and purple on the right skull which doesnt even seem to be part of the stick. As if +/- 3 chars are a bit out of place.
I was wondering if all the detail there made it necessary as technical format concession or was it a choice to blend it all in together?
In general, I like mixing odd colours in here and there, a bad habit I share with Boris Vallejo. ;) I often do that when I do non-digital work too.
About the brown bits on the skull, old blood turns brown, old bones also tend to turn yellow/brown. Finally, brown is slightly darker than dark gray, another reason for using brown in that area of the skull.
Purple is darker than gray and brighter than dark gray/brown, so you could simply view it as part of the gradient dithering, or as a piece of purple cloth or feathers attached to the skullstick. Or a smudge of purpe blood? This is a fantasy picture after all, blood doesn't have to be red.
Then again, it could be that I had no plan behind any of it and that I'm just desperately making all this up now in an attempt to hide some of the flaws in the picture. | User Comment Submitted by Tim on 25 February 2008
just changed my vote from 8 to 10 after looking at it over and over and over again.. omg can't even choose now which one i like best, this one or Leon's.. both are excellent! | User Comment Submitted by saehn on 25 February 2008
This looks even better on the real machine. The light green really pops. It reminds me of two of my other favorite graphicians... oys because of the sparkle style and ptoing because of the yus-like head. The heavy mixture of color is inspiring. Great work, Vanja! | User Comment Submitted by Mermaid on 24 February 2008
Thank you all! Just got back online after 2 days (useless isp..), I've uploaded a zipped .d64 image with some workstages, for those of you who enjoy that sort of thing. | User Comment Submitted by Skate on 24 February 2008 User Comment Submitted by tempest on 24 February 2008 User Comment Submitted by Edhellon on 24 February 2008
I am, like, totally speechless... brilliant composition, brilliant pixeling, brilliant shading and all this in a simple koala pic... Yay! \o/ | User Comment Submitted by jailbird on 24 February 2008
Awesome! <3
And to the flying fuck who voted 2 for this: you sir, are a complete idiot. | User Comment Submitted by FATFrost on 24 February 2008
Vanja, i will marry you just to get all your pixels!! | User Comment Submitted by Archmage on 24 February 2008
Very cool! Nice colour usage, oh yes indeedio. | User Comment Submitted by VoDKa on 24 February 2008
Mushrooms! Yummy! Me like. | User Comment Submitted by Tim on 24 February 2008
Very nice! Unfortunately I missed seeing the graphics on the party (as did a few others due to smoking in the freezing cold outside and not knowing the compo started), would have love to seen this on the big screen!
Out of pure curiosity though, a detail question:

My deepest respect! I am blown away. | User Comment Submitted by Shadow on 24 February 2008
Very nice - combines both a great artistic composition with some superb technique! Amazes me to see how the limits of the mc-mode are overcome and produce such a result. | User Comment Submitted by oys on 23 February 2008 User Comment Submitted by Deev on 23 February 2008
oys: sorry, I'm fickle :) I'll probably change my mind again in a few minutes! | User Comment Submitted by oys on 23 February 2008
deev: OH! thanks!!!... not (just kidding :) ofcourse this should win, it's one of the best mc pictures ever). | User Comment Submitted by Deev on 23 February 2008
I just wrote on the comments for Oys' entry that I think he should've won the compo, then looked at this a little longer and started to change my mind :) I like the colours and the attention to detail. | User Comment Submitted by Joe on 23 February 2008
Nice details and thanks for letting me see that preview! | User Comment Submitted by Motion on 23 February 2008
Vanja, the way you lay down pixels is just mindblowing! The shading is just plain stunning! :D

Ooh! I remember seeing an earlier version and I don't know if this one is very different... but it's cool nonetheless!
