This must have been the first demo I ever saw - amazing. Lightforce remains one of my top tracks to this day, and when I hear it, I instantly think of this picture. | User Comment Submitted by ThunderBlade on 24 September 2020
This will always have a special place for me. Many "demos" from that time were just ripped title game pics with ripped music, along with a scroller. Here we have one of the first who brings their very own picture. Music still ripped, and still just a scroller, but special effect in the border there. :) | User Comment Submitted by celticdesign on 8 June 2018
This had a massive impact to me due to the outstanding graphics and the superb music score from rob hubbard back in the days.
A real treasure in scene c64 demo history for sure. | User Comment Submitted by Knight Rider on 8 June 2018 User Comment Submitted by Rough on 6 November 2013
"I still have the letter he sent our house with various legal threates,"
Haha, what a lamer. It's notoriously ridicolous and hypocrisy in perfection when (former) crackers whine about their own stuff being copied. | User Comment Submitted by lemming on 22 January 2010
Fun scroller :-D
"Oh dear Rob, someone has cracked your routine !!!! Poor guy !!!! By the way, thanx for cracking it Judges !!!!"
TMC wasn't that happy when Future Composer was released ;-) I still have the letter he sent our house with various legal threates, hehheh.
Oh, those were the times...

I've moved the 'ghostbyte' discussion to a forum thread.
Please reply there to keep reviews on topic ;) | User Comment Submitted by tlr on 5 December 2008
@Cruzer: Using the ghost-byte/idle-fetch was quite common in 1986. This is probably one of the first (the first?) examples of splitting it though.
Examples of "normal" usage at the time: Comic Bakery Music | User Comment Submitted by Jammer on 5 December 2008
so to what extent can i control this 'garbage'? in terms of chars and colours. | User Comment Submitted by Cruzer on 5 December 2008
Ghostbyte in 1986? Was that a first?

jeff&jammer:
That's right, if the VIC is set at bank 3 by default for example, then that effect can be done by twiddling $3fff at every raster line. I remember first seeing this effect in a NATO Intro/Demo Editor coded by Zero, and how amazed I was to see a vertical 40-column scroll-text in the border with colour raster bars. Of course, it was used in other productions too.
Great picture btw!! :) | User Comment Submitted by Soren on 5 December 2008
@Jammer: The last address in every gfx-block is used for that. I think it's referred to as "garbage bits". With some rastertiming you can change those bits to achieve something like in that demo. I still find garbage bits interesting :-) | User Comment Submitted by Jammer on 5 December 2008
how did they do those patterns on borders? not expanded sprites can be only 192px wide :O | User Comment Submitted by G-Fellow on 23 November 2008
I watched this demo as kid for hours, because of the music, Rob Hubbard´s Lightforce. I got this demo in the school, we traded it on the schoolyard. | User Comment Submitted by d0c on 21 April 2008
i remember finding this one on a turbo tape, its one of my all time favorites from the old days :) | User Comment Submitted by Tim on 21 April 2008
1986? WOAAH it still looks awesome! | User Comment Submitted by Rough on 31 August 2007
full agreement, I was astonished when I saw this pic the first time | User Comment Submitted by Ed on 14 December 2006
STE's art was something of a mindblower back in the day. |
