I almost cant believe what I just saw on my c64. At first I was thinking "What gfx mode is this??" and I had to read some posts here to really believe it was hi-res. Truly amazing picture. The style remotely reminds me of some of Poison/Oneway's work. The fact that it is hi-res and executed THIS well makes ten seem like not enough. Took my breath away.

I think Veto should make deblocking filters and then license them to videoplayer makers and get filthy rich! ;-D

Yeah, now I know why I find this pic so intriguing, it really DOES remind of Miyazaki! ;-D Thx for the pointer, guys (shame on me I didn't realize myself, i own all of his films on DVD, even some collector'S editions! 8)
"Porco Rosso" springs to mind... but then again, he's no pig, and there are flying things in every other Miyazaki movie, too! ;-D

Has a 'Studio Ghibli' style to it, so to me, it all looks just perfect. Who was it that said, 'Nice shiny ball?'. That's the canopy of the aircraft he's flying! :D

Veto - You're amazing and very unique. What you've achieved here is astounding.

Incredible hires art! I like this picture very much including the tension the face gives compared to the rest. Biggest respect!

this is one awesome hires pic. its almost impossible to find color clashes (as cruzer said).

I do agree with the face vs rest thing tho, yet, everything else is second to none.

Original, colourful, great! Thank you, Veto, this is amazing. I personally think the face is a good ingredient, BECAUSE it uses less of the dithering used elsewhere. It is a peculiar face, and that is good. It keeps me looking at this guy. If he would be flawless he would be less interesting.

It is actually hard to believe this is hires, although you've shown me the pic in zoom mode.. even if it was afli it would still be unexpected...

Yeah, I'd also like to see the workstages. Not that I doubt that it was properly pixelled, but I'm really curious.

I second Oswald and the others, this pic is just amazing. The face is a bit off in style from the rest indeed, but still bloody amazing overall.

BTW there's a blog entry (in hungarian, sorry) about the pic in one of the most read blogs in .hu:

Holy cow! What a mesmerizing pic!
See how just 16 colors can really do magic.

What a bullshit about the face not fitting. It fits perfectly. Brings Hayo Miyazaki's works to mind.
Realistic face would ruin this painting.

Pure magic! I would put this up on my wall any day. Thumbs up.

oh - wow. what happened here? i really like to thank you all for the comments and votes. especially because this is my first full screen hires pic and the production was more like a fight than work - my deep respect for all graphicians who are specialized on this mode.
@DeeKay: dithering? me? aaargh... but you are right. strictly speaking there is a similar technique. personally i call this "structure painting" but "rough dithering" would also be an adequat description...

I agree with some of the other comments that the cartoon face doesn't quite fit, but everything around it is really well done.

A breath of fresh air! The pixels are a bit undisciplined, but seen as a whole this is very nice. Makes me want to have a go at hires next.

Wow. I am totally speechless just how blockless, colorful and at the same time detailled you can make a simple hires pic! Awesome!

P.S: Can i see some faint traces of dithering in there, Veto? ;-)

Great!!!! When I had a look at first, I didn't thought at all it was a simple hires pic ! One of the best ever made (with "Under the Red Tree" by Mermaid) !

I agree about the face being the flaw of the concept/composition. Still worth a 7.

Best Hires pic I've ever seen. Up til now I only thought hires was seriously useful for single colour pictures and logos, or in combination with sprite layers. I am so happy to be proven wrong. This is kick ass :)

Some impressive stuff can be drawn in standard hires. You only have to look at some of the speccy gfx (which have a poor range of colors and i believe more restrictions on color combinations (ink/paper?)

Really great pic. But I do agree with PaulBearer, somehow the beauty of the sky doesn't completely go with the style of the face. Again, though: great pic. Very impressive and inspiring use of hi-res!

Submitted by Tom-Cat on 2 March 2009
Wow. Possibly the best HiRes picture I have ever seen. I love it. It feels like its made on amiga, or atleast uses sprites to hide attribute clash. Can't believe it is pure hires. Top-Notch. 10 !

I have to be honest, I really don't like the combination of the simple comic face and the beautifully "painted" surroundings, it just doesn't fit together IMO. But it's obvious that a lot of talent and work is behind this picture.

One of the best performed hirespictures ever. Very painterly (as usual), good usage of color and a fresh approach. :-)
Technically, i'd say that this is very much in the same league as An Ugly, Single Color Female Face and Under the Red Tree.
