Using music - what's the correct procedure?
Back in the day when I was last active on the C64 scene, getting music for a demo consisted of the following procedure (atleast if you didn't have a musician in your group):
* Watch demos/games, look for music you want.
* Rip music.
* If author name known, give credit in scroller.
Now I'm working on a demo for the C64 DTV and need some music. Is the above way still deemed acceptable today, or is explicit permission from the author considered the only correct way?
Also is there a difference between tunes already used in demos and tunes released at compos etc. but still not used in a release?
I mean, to me a tune that has already been featured in a production could be considered out there for public use, whereas a tune featured only in a compo still perhaps is waiting to be used in a demo by the authors group?
Also, on an unrelated matter - how do I go about relocating music? I found some nice tunes here on CSDB, but some where in very strange memory areas and I would like to move them to $1000 or something...

there's lots of musicians active who will be happy to write for you music. open another thread for asking music or ask them here.
another method is to use hvsc for a similar procedure you have described.
using an already released music is kinda considered "lame", however if its a quite unknown one its ok. if you give credit you are safe, ppl will be max bored of hearing the well known tune again / or it will be a strange experience for them to listening to a music associated with another demo in your production.
as a rule of thumb you can do anything until you give credit.
there are various relocators for the wast amount of different players, try allround relocator. or just simply try to ask the author if he can relocate it / and give permission to use. |

Oswald summed it up very well.
But you should really try to contact current Musicians for new Tunes, the ratio of Coders/Graphicians/Musicians is ca. 10%/15%/75%. (So, most Musicians are happy to have there Tune in a Demo)

Remember to say it's for a C64DTV demo though, musicians'll need to make some concessions to that hardware! |

How about a general promise not to strangle anyone when they hear the endresult (unless they also test on DTV themselves) |

Thanks for the replies all!
Having music composed especially for my demo would be cool ofcourse, but it's a quite tight time schedule, I'm aiming to have the demo ready for BFP 2007, so it would need to be a fast (and preferably good) composer! Any takers? :)
Regarding the missing filters on the DTV, I've read that they were missing, but tell you the truth, I actually couldn't hear all that much difference when listening to tunes on the DTV compared to on my C64. Guess I'm not a real SID aficionado... ;)
