SID Synth
SID Synth - virtual analog synthesizer
Concept plan revision 1.0
by rambones, 2009 03 06
# what is it ?
It is an analog synthesizer, built with modern digital technology anno 2009+
Based on the MOS SID 6581/8580 by Bob Yannes
# features
.8 inch LCD color screen
.Commodore 64 compatible - it plays any .sid file from HVSC, www.hvsc.c64.org
.It can run any SID Synth compatible C64 music editor (JCH, BullSID, SDI etc.)
.SID Synth Tracker (built in), makes it possible to edit any existing .sid - regardless of player technology and capabilities. (Universal SID Music Format)
.48 voices (16 SID chips) - stereo
.16 filters, 1 pr every 3 voices (full C64 compatibility)
.balanced 6581 emulation (stable filter) with saturation/distortion
.4 octave keyboard
.midi
.SDHC card reader
.knobs, sliders to control everything
.programmable F keys, to map functions to match your favorite SID music editor
.QWERTY keyboard
# ways to implement
OS = linux variant + VICE
or
a more or less complete C64 on a FPGA
# desired build
The complete design should be modular, so any person can assemble it from a box of components that are put together without glue or soldering.
(IKEA furniture)
This makes it easy to repair, with no need to send to factory.
# last words
Every SID musician and SID lover should have one!

I did post a lengthy post and I lost it because I pressed a wrong button. (FNUUUURRRHH)
the main idea was that I didn't know that SID emulation took up so much CPU power but that the DTV had decent results and that 4-5 years on who knows?
Conclusion was that Jan, for now, I think you're stuck with a netbook and some fancy apps. (which costs about the same as such a device would)And that you shouldn't give up because once you have some sort of device you want all those idiots here will be green and purple with envy! :D |

Quote:The biggest hurdle here, is to make the soundchip - the rest is trivial.
if thats your opinion - go, buy an fpga board, start working on the reimplementation. any "design" beyond this is pointless 100% before you dont even have that one core part of what you are designing.

urks. the DTV "sid" is like... horrible. really. :) but no doubt, its possible to make a decent sid replica in a fpga even today (infact i know someone who his considering doing it as a spinoff of another project).

yeah right. the 'SID' in the DTV lacks a lot of stuff... such as ADSR and the filters... so no, it doesn't even come close ;_)

@JackAsser (and, sorry, quite off the topic)
Gideon made a SID core for the 1541U?! |

@knoekie
Yes I meant decent results considering that the board had to emulate a complete c64 with it and only had maybe 5% (wild guess, please don't shoot me) of its power dedicated to sound.
I think I am spoiled because the virtual analog synth-keyboards I use, as I found out recently, mostly use parallel DSP's. (And I somehow managed to forget the average price-tag of 3k euros)
That is not to brag but a genuine mistake of me. :) |

Rambones told me that I could probably make music when he was looking over my shoulder at how I ordered my pixels at X. Making a SID tune is a dream that I've had for two decades, but I never would have made a go at it if he hadn't said that. It may not have turned out as brilliant as my dream wanted it to be, but I know for a fact that it would never even have happened without that pat on the back. Therefore, gogo Jan and nevermind the naysayers. :) |

Yes, I think that if you can get a decent SID emulation on an FPGA then that's already a lot of the job done. I am no hardware engineer though ;)
