Question about CMD FD-2000 replica

Can anyone shed a bit more light about those drives: http://www.ebay.com/itm/REAR-ADMIRAL-FIREDRIVE-2K-CMD-FD-2000-R..

The sellers seems to be selling a number of other replicas as well.

Looking at how prices are increasing I would suggest not selling any of the original and rare hardware unless you have to as it seems it may be quite a good investment unless the retro fashion dies. I never had FD2000 so I'd like to ask is it really so superior to 1581, especially when working with C128?

Though I owned a c128 back then I never used the c128 or any specials of it apart from maybe 2mhz pack/depack support.
Also the attached FD2000 about never was used with anything else than 1581 DD disks. So - nice to have - nothing major over a 1581 with JD ROM.

The two advantages over the 1581 for me

- my 1581s would randomly eat disks and that wasn't an issue with the FD2000

- not limited to DD disks, the FD2000 can use HD disks also

Not sure what the question was. If they've replicated the hardware then the ROM dump should work in VICE with the FD-2000 emulation.

But I would not be surprised if it would turn out that the ROM is a copy as well...

indeed. that admiral decker guy has a history of making plain 1:1 replicas, including the ROMs.

The big advantage of the FD-2000 over the 1581 was the SWAP button: You could change its device # from 9 (or 10) to 8 on the fly - without turning off the 1541 @ 8! For me back in 1992 it was great. Without a SWAP button you cannot load/save data from most C64 programs because they mostly only support device #8. E.g. in a notemaker I just put my music disk (6336 blocks) in the FD, press SWAP and load a music - into any notemaker.

Nowadays I miss a SWAP button in the 1541U. :)

Btw. ages ago I created a website explaining the advantages of the FD over the 81, because folks - just like many here - were not aware of the advantages (e.g. real subdir support...). It's no longer relevant today but seems still to be online. http://www.cmdweb.de
