Handlestory :
I wanted to make a fresh start in the C64 scene with a new handle ...plus, I had just watched Revenge of the Sith again.

Trivia :
I became interested in the Commodore 64 initially (as I am sure many did) through visits to friends' houses in the early 80's, probably initially when I was only 9 or 10 years old. My friend Dave let me create my own character disk for Ultima IV around 1985 or so. I was obsessed...that game almost became a religion for me. Naturally we played a lot of other games, and even before that year, we had seen his 64 through the data casette (tape) years. I remember wondering if the tape version of Ghostbusters would ever load. I recall the minimal CBM text intros of those early years, and eventually seeing my first ESI intros. I yearned to be a part of this intellectually endowed rebellion that I knew was going on behind the scenes...the illegality of it was intriguing, but it beckoned rather than threatened. The notion that something I did using my mind and a computer could anger authority figures seemed a positive one...and even as an adult, nothing has changed in that area.

I finally bought my C64C sometime in late 1986, but even though I dreamed about getting a modem and calling boards, this did not happen until 1988, at which time I had sold my 64 in order to raise the funds for my Amiga 500. I quickly purchased a then new and very fast 2400 baud modem, which I replaced a year later (1989) with a refurbished HST USR 9600 baud modem, which was quite fast for those times.

I was known as Necromancer (primarily in the early Amiga, and the H/P scene ) through 88-89 and on into the 90's. Most of my activities in the mid - late 90's involved C and Unix (and a group called STSI) plus a little intel asm. I did not want to have the same handle as an already established member of the C64 scene in a similarly spelled group.

I believe that there is no substitute for the real C64 when coding and enjoying demos and games. I work on the actual hardware whenever possible, and have both a PAL and NTSC c64 plus a monitor capable of both display modes. However, I believe that in order to accomplish difficult, technical or complex tasks (and to sometimes do this rapidly) one should not close his/her mind to any tools which are available. This includes emulators and cross platform development and graphics tools. Where would we be without tools like Star Commander and DirMaster?

So the goal is to stick close to the actual C64, but thinking in absolute terms will just slow us down. I find it amusing that many believe that somehow the 1980's "scene rules" ought to apply now, in 2009. I am as conservative and nostalgic as the next guy, but the world has changed quite a bit over the last 2 to 3 decades. If the scene doesn't adapt with it (at least a little) then it is writing its own epitaph. I'd like to thank the people who have been open about their coding techniques. You all know who you are.

About this site:
CSDb (Commodore 64 Scene Database) is a website which goal is to gather as much information and material about the scene around the commodore 64 computer - the worlds most popular home computer throughout time. Here you can find almost anything which was ever made for the commodore 64, and more is being added every day. As this website is scene related, you can mostly find demos, music and graphics made by the people who made the scene (the sceners), but you can also find a lot of the old classic games here. Try out the search box in the top right corner, or check out the CSDb main page for the latest additions.
