DRAX: Yes, because of some limitations you must be more creative. (making music in 3 tracks f.i. which we mainly do). Which can bring better things.
But some limitations bring poorer music. (f.i. no use of filter or don't use waveform X or so). It should not be exaggerated IMHO.

@Peacemaker: I was surprised as you entered the compo. I guess as a "SID newbie" you can be pleased with all 3 tunes placed among top 35 with 80 competitors.

a demo group would offer part of their demo (intro for example) and the composers will make the sound to it. an old demo could be used for this, if there is any demo group with a nice demo-intro would offer their work for the composers and the competition .. i think you get the idea.

I kinda liked the compo because of the limitations would be cool with a new compo with even more limitations for instance only being able to use one specific chord progression or only using one waveform or something else... |

BTW: We in Laxity are working on a music compilation based on the compo, which will be released in a few days.
Idea: How about a compo for CHILL-OUT or LONGPLAY SIDs which you can listen for many minutes without getting on your nerves?

Wisdom: Ah, I see what you mean. The outtro just before ithe song loops sounds and definitely the waves look like the intro. So, I thought that it already looped. Didn't notice the difference between the intro and outro.

@Mr Ammo; thanks for your effort and nice recordings. As for my tune (Retrochild), the length of the tune is ~50 seconds, not 46 seconds as in current recording. This is curicial for judgement, so I will be happy if you can re-record it again. Thank you.
Congratulations to Didi for this overly successful event and to all participants for all the great tunes they have contributed. This event is surely the most productive SID event in recent years. Thanks everybody who helped realizing it.

Well, to add my two cents to this discussion: the first finished version of my tune was 61 seconds (64 $10 measures at $05 speed). Was all ready to send it in, but then I saw just in time that Didi was going to be strict about the 60s limit.
So, back to the composing board. Returned to the tune, decided to trim down the initial measure by a quarter, added a mini-transition and dare I say it, it gave the tune a small, but noticeable improvement to its dynamic. Enforcing constraints isn't a bad thing as we all know too well - after all, isn't our dahling system naturally constrained to 64k at any one time?
That said, I can't help but feel a bit miffed about the 'Linus case', mainly because afaik you can't easily set any BPM you want on c64.
As such, future compos of this sort may want to consider adding a small amount of slack to the tune length, for example: tune length = 60 seconds [+ 1 second allowed technical margin]. This still is SMART, as both running time and the technical margin are correctly defined.
Or, SMARTer still ;), just forget about silly units such as 'one minute' and rather determine the max tune length by accurately measuring how long it takes for the c64 to finish a certain amount of measures of certain length at a widely used speed (64 measures of length $10 at speed $04, for example). With such figures and info, composers can then simply recalculate how many measures they need to compose at the speed of their choice and perfectly fall within the desired timing!

Flex, I can't see any real fuzz and I am not bitter or anything. In case of my tune, it would have actually worked better in a shorter version, the resolution ending on chord D7 (if I remember correctly) should have used half of the bars but i wanted to use the full one minute range - sadly, without measuring accurately enough tho thinking a second more would not be deal breaker.
In the end, if I ran the compo I would certainly have some tolerance towards a couple of seconds if they make sense. That's where I am absolutely with Jammer.
That being said, it's all good - thanks for a great compo, Didi.

Though I like some of the out of competitions songs a lot and am glad that they were released, in a way I understand that Didi sticks to the rules that strictly - once you start only slightly bending them, you might open Pandora's box.

Hey c'mon!!! What's the fuzz all about this... 1 minute and that's it! Pretty clear I would say.
I've recently faced myself a "problem" like should I release one more tune in this competition or should I keep on making it just bigger (more than just 1 minute).. I've had many good ideas with a song, but making it whole and repeatable really demands "skills" of "letting go" or just skills of making it more "loopable"...
Therefore I don't like the idea of people here releasing just some worktunes etc. without the attitude making it into a decent intro tune.. Putting a whole song into 1 minute really needs some extra touch & idea in it. Please give us some more unforgettable notes & feelings in these last days of the competition may I ask... |

Final words about the playtime-limit and disqualifications due to it:
Maybe I should have set the limit clearly to 1:00.000 to avoid any discussion. I will learn from it if I will organize another competition sometime with a timelimit.
The Following tunes definately do not meet the limit and will run out of competition:
Pastel Coloured Nights
The Smooth Edge
Verseny, vagy mi a szösz
Wekkie Bekkie
Glass Dick
All tunes are measured with a stop-watch by hand played on hardware and by recording it played with re-sid engine and checking the time in a music editor. The result has been the same.
I will check all tunes for their playtime until compo ends, so if you are not sure to meet the rules, you'd better review your entry.
As the compo is not over and there is no entry limit per composer you may re-enter with a re-edit of your tune meeting the limit.
I know this is a hard decision especialy because Pastel Coloured Nights would rank in the top ten at the moment. Other composers ripped their ass off and cut their tunes to meet the rules, so it would be unfair to them to make exception to it. |

Here to give a nother intermediate ranking list. After the confusion about the real averages I switched back to the weighted averages used by CSDb. Tunes with equal weighted ranking are ranked by amount of tens, nines, eights, etc. This ranking will also be used for the final ranking. This gives a little advantage to the tunes with many votes, but that's the way it is.
Please remember:
Deadline for entry submission is January 31, 2013 at 23:59:59 (11:59:59 pm) CET.
Voting closes one week later at February 7, 2013 at 23:59:59 (11:59:59 pm) CET.
So you see after the entry deadline you will have another week to place your votes for the final ranking. I encourage you to vote to make the result as fair as possible.
Also check out the MP3 rips made with HardSID made by Mr. Ammo, so you can listen to the tunes wherever you want. Might help you with your votes.

I just listened again to Pastel Coloured Nights and recorded it from real hardware (c64). I looked at the 1 minute mark and noticed that this song has a (sort of a) fade out. Around the 1:01:099 mark it loops. I must say it's quite an unconventional, or rather, creative fade since it's almost unrecognizable as a fade out.
The rules say:
- max. playtime 1:00 min. (PAL playing speed), then repeat or fade
So, I wouldn't be too hard to enforce this rule on Linus' entry.
Also, the other rules don't seem to be enforced as much as the time limit rule. There are quite some entries that do not match the 'no SID model preference (should sound good on all SID models)' rule. I know it's also a matter of taste, but some entries sound totally different on either sid chip. Please have a listen to the following songs on both chips: Canon457, City Cowboy, Diabolique, Funky as Fuck and Introduction to Modernity.

| a couple of seconds actually, not milliseconds, it loops on the 1:02 mark while the rule says clearly it should loop on 1:00 mark and not even 1:01 (that would be 61 seconds); strict or not, rules are equal for everyone; trim your compo tunes meeting the compo rules, then release extended versions out of compo. |

I've updated the MP3 recordings (using hardsid) with all new entries since Jan 17.
All entries are recorded from 6581 and 8580. So, two recordings per entry since one of the rules says that the music should sound good on both sid-chips. So, some entries could be disqualified because of that rule ;)

| I count raw votes average, because the CSDb voting with only 1 decimal digit is not differentiated enough for the compo. In most cases the CSDb votes and the raw averages are very close. Mainly tunes where the voting is very spread differ. |

Awesome that inspite of all the ace tunes already released, there doesn't seem to be an ending, but even 10 days before deadline, still extremely hi quality tunes are entering. Starfish, for instance, was a great surprise and instantly became my personal favorite in this competition although there were a fistful of tunes before of which I thought they were almost impossible to top. |

really... this compo became impressive. i first thought it would end up with just a few tunes.
but when i checked the csdb-statistics, i noticed that the year 2012 had as many c64 releases as we had 1998 the last time (more than 1500 releases which is +~500 compared to 2011).
so it is alive and kicking :) |

| I did not expect so many entries nor participants. From the view of now I really should have limited it to one up to three entries per musician. But now the rules are that way and we have to live with them. Not all entries have typical intro vibe but it's not the case that the compo is flooded with crap tunes. In the end there might be more tunes in this compo than cracks released over the whole year. ;) |

| NTSC is allowed, but it may not exceed the playtime of 1:00 when played on PAL speed. I just defined it that way to make it 100% clear. On the 2 tunes which exceed the limit it was already tried to argue about playing them at NTSC speed would keep them within the limit. I expected this, so I just had to quote the rules there. ;) |

Guess the limits even increase the productivity of composers resulting in a massive amount of brandnew tunes most of which are really high quality. | Usually crack intros are not watched very long and I wanted to set a limit to give the composers a challenge. Maybe I could have set it a bit longer, but now it is that way and I will not change the rules while the compo is running. In the first one you had C64 wrapped in original packaging, with disc drive. 1541 Ultimate II and decent monitor in mint condition.
And let's say, the other one would have PC with 4gb ram, preinstalled Windows 7 and all that thing you have in standard PC's of today. Plus some decent monitor. Not HD, bud not the smallest one either.
Which one would give you the more joy.

No problem getting below $1000 bytes with Goat Tracker 2 - you just need to think conservatively while composing.
In fact, I often assume no more than 4k is available for music in my demo code. |

| A crack intro is something where size and memory usage is important. The range from $1000-$2000 cannot be used for graphics so it's usually used for the music. There are plenty of great tunes which are far below this limit. Spider already proved it can be done with a current editor, too. (SID-Wizard 1.2 LIGHT) |

I think music is an important part of a good intro. Some crack intros even made musics famous. Who doesn't remember the Driud II music used by Fairlight. Many people only remember it from the intro, not from the game. For a crack intro music has to be short, catchy and simple to make it rememberable.
THE RULES:
- max. playtime 1:00 min. (PAL playing speed), then repeat or fade.
- max. size: $1000 bytes (preferably located in memory at $1000-$2000)
- single speed only
- no SID model preference (should sound good on all SID models)
- must be handed in as executable format .sid or .prg (might be embedded in .t64 or .d64)
- no graphics or even intro-like presentation is allowed to be included.
- Productions using the music might be released after the voting deadline. The voting should be focussed on the music itself.
- the participating musics may not have been released or used in a public production before.
- multiple entries per musician allowed.
Deadline for entry submission is January 31, 2013 at 23:59:59 (11:59:59 pm).
Voting closes one week later at February 7, 2013 at 23:59:59 (11:59:59 pm).
Voting platform is CSDb, therefore entries have to be posted here.
No prices to win, just the fame. But if your tune is great, there will surely be someone to use it. |
