DeeKay - well, em, lameme only checked this with Vice (gotta check with C64+TV and LCD yet) and none of other pics flickers besides the mentioned one. So I dunno why it does so. %) But aparently must be Vice's `feature` :))

Nope - I've found it's one of the LCD monitors here I use does the flickering.

So... Let's see what we've got during the past year or so: Two C= parties bigger and better than ever, Edge of Disgrace, four 8-bit digi channels plus two SID channels and ALL can be filtered. And now you throw this at my face.

In -93 I thought that C64 scene was dead and nothing new was to come. I'm very glad to admit - I was wrong. :)

yes the logos and that part were really overseen by the scene I think as I think that part is great too... Well, I am pixeling on the c64 again and we will create another wonder... ha ha...

like i said before, the scene right now is like 1992 all over again!!! i remember watching emotional breakdown while scoffing some snacks in my bedroom after finishing my paper round! what bliss... the quality of releases now it comparable to back then... oh and btw @PAL, i loved the preview/advert that you and Geir produced with the excellent group logos and digi music!!! i still watch that today!

This is what I call a blast... what beautiful graphics you have gathered in here and the versions on display is just soo interesting and amazing. When that Bowie tune hits the speakers I feel like I am in nirvana... that is one of my favs sids right there together with the last one from Geir... c64 is pretty cool after all these years... hmmm...

booker: it's technically impossible that it flickers! ;-) But sometimes monitors or overheating VIC-chips introduce "dot-creep", that seems to move. Song of Fall has large checkerboard-rastered areas, and any color-change (such as e.g. checkerboard mixing colors) can cause dot-creep!

Submitted by booker on 30 July 2009
I think "Song of all" by Leon flickers a bit in few places :) Found the hidden part, yay \o/

btw. amazing stuff with this NUFLI

after watching css on the big screen, real c64, emulator and studying the format restrictions i totally agree with you deekay that this really is the future for c64 graphic stills. most people at the compo did not seem to mention the differences to the original ifli classics - at the end of the day this is an impressive fact. forget the 7th place: you started a revolution.
User Comment
Submitted by HCL on 24 July 2009
There is a certain scent of quality in the Crest-productions ever since Avantgarde 15+ years ago. Eventhough the group has been through some hard times, there is no trace of that in here. Decent code + music + graphic + design all through..

#7 in the compo does not reflect on anything really, personally i think it should have been released outside the demo-compo.

@Linus, that Norman tune went over the speakers at LCP, where did it come from then? Anyone?
User Comment
Submitted by DRAX on 23 July 2009
Actually the tune is called "Break-up"
User Comment
Submitted by DRAX on 23 July 2009
Thanks Hydrogen and Psycho... It's actually partly a conversion of a Blackfield song called "Blackfield" - it's not a 1:1-conversion far from... I think most of the tune is done in 2005 and then I rushed to add some bits in the end as Roland and DK needed it to be a little longer ;)

Great production guys. And bow to the king of 8580, Linus! Love the Tim Follin approach on the Paul Norman tunes, blended with your style. Luvely! The rest is masterpieces aswell. Jeff's tune "Touching Cloth" is VERY lovely also (Finally you released something;) )

Frantik: I know - it *is* a slideshow, check the name! <:-) I explicitly told the guys to let the audience decide if it should be partaking in the democompo, didn't anyone ask?
We'd have been fine with an out-of-compo release, too! ;-) We just don't want to bore anyone!...
User Comment
Submitted by Frantic on 21 July 2009
Deekay: I think most people really liked it, but the "problem" was probably more that it didn't completely fit into the traditional category of "demo" since it is leaning more towards a slide show.. ...so I basically think that the placement in the compo is a bit irrelevant in this case. Everyone agrees that it is top quality in any case. Thumbs up for this great stuff!

...but yes.. Of course you're right about showing this with a projector too. The difference between the initial pictures and the zoingFLIboing pictures was not really visible on the bigscreen.
User Comment
Submitted by Sander on 21 July 2009
The music is too awesome <3

The new mode looks really exciting, however - any mode which has 'Xth line can do x colors and the Yth line only xxx', is not a very native intuitive standard for creating pixel graphics. (i personally hate it :)
Gotto thumb up the effort though! And the results are really amazing.

(and, i also noticed that boner - nice details :)

@deekay: Good thing that I downloaded Top Gear as soon it was released on the torrents! I do miss UK TV! ...although the c64 is my true entertainment constant in life. Thanx for this special marker in my memory banks. :) Oh, that spacebar invoked 'loading' screen is wicked. ...I'm happy, hope you're happy, too. ;)

Submitted by DeeKay on 21 July 2009
Haha, fantastic, somebody noticed the rabbit's boner! ;-D

"Ashes to Ashes" coincidentially was played in the current episode of "Top Gear" i saw yesterday.. Unfortunately not Linus' version! ;-)

Submitted by Motion on 21 July 2009
This is a stunning moment in c64 history! Presented with such great humour and attention to detail - it really is a pleasure to behold. I am genuinely overjoyed! The rabbits 'erection' poking through the hat was a huilarious moment - not only are you code and pixel wizards, but also scholars of subtle humour, too! :)

Linus - a fantastic arrangement of Ashes to Ashes - I love this David Bowie track!

Submitted by DeeKay on 20 July 2009
Carrion just tells me that people totally did not get the concept of the slideshow on LCP - since projectors don't show any flicker, resulting in many people being seriously confused and a rather bad placing... I had already feared this and instructed Joe to warn people about the main idea of the whole thing probably not showing on a projector, but apparently it ran at the very end of the compo (can't blame the orgas for that! ;-) at ridiculous-o-clock and Joe had long gone home... Ah, whatever, apparently ppl do appreciate it anyway, watching it on their own machines! ;-)

Whoa! this is incredible (for real, might not have believed if not seen on c64 :).
Im a bit afraid of noobs converting their wired stuff into NUFLI now, where PETSII would have been sufficient - but hell, cant blame this gem here for it!
I feel a disturbance of the fore :)

Trully amazing ... Now if I could just get my hands on a real c64 to try it now... I'm to far away from home... will have to wait at least 10 hours and 17 minutes to turn it on and see that last interlaced logo part in all its glory!!!

What's really impressive here is the music. Linus is not human. Major respect for handling the time signature in "Pyramid Song" so well.
User Comment
Submitted by DeeKay on 19 July 2009
Wile: the first image being unselectable is actually not a bug, but technically not possible - because it's integrated directly into the intro!
Disk A-C vs 1-3 is incoherent, yes, will be fixed!...

selecting sth from the imageselector loading the endpart works just fine here, both vice and real thing!
User Comment
Submitted by Deev on 19 July 2009
WOW!

I feel more excited watching this than I have watching anything for years! I've wanted this for so long, I want to kiss you all! :)

The sheer amount of time taken to pixel something in MUFLI is always what's put me off. When I drew "Blown a Wish" (cheers for recommending it Wec!) it was pixelled in the C64's resoloution on a PC with the intention of trying to match the pixels as best I could in the MUFLI editor, but I ran out of time and patience and so quickly converted it to IFLI instead.

I once suggested somewhere on this very site that it would be great to have a tool that converted my C64 graphics to these hires modes, but I never thought it would happen, or they would seemingly look so great!

The thought of working at the C64's resoloution with the C64's palette and NOT having to worry about shitty gfx modes is like a dream come true!

Just out of interest, did you find it works better with some pics over others? (though there does seem a wide variety of styles on show here). Anything you put through it that just looked like crap converted to NUFLI?

Very nice, very nice indeed!
End part doesn't seem to to work with my REAL C64 (breadbox) equipped with 1541Ultimate, I tried it for several times, one time end part ran for some seconds, other tries I just got "Ready." prompt.

edit: ok, I forgot to disable REU emulation as well from 1541U, with REU disabled it seems to work :)

Submitted by _V_ on 19 July 2009
Another feat by Crest! Good luck to the new members :)

It's going to be interesting seeing pictures which are finetuned for this mode... because these conversions may be nice, but it is easy to see how they (the original pictures) have been coloured and "over-dithered" to take advantage of the interlace effect.

Electric's pictures are the best, of course :)
User Comment
Submitted by Hoild on 19 July 2009
As Jailbird said, interlace still has its uses. A few examples:

1. creating a 'depth of field' effect by using matching even/odd fields in one layer of a composition and interlacing another layer. It can create a good 'out of focus' effect.

2. optimizing for large projector displays.

3. adding literally vibrant colours or adding strong emphasis to a particular part of the picture.

So Long Live Interlace, having options is always a good thing. \;]>

BTW, truly amazing, and no more eye-battering flickering, but the interlace blurring still might be quite useful when painting exclusively for bigscreens =)

Apparently this does not work with the very latest cutting edge versions of VICE. Probably a bug got introduced in VICE, since it works on all the versions before - as well as on the real machine!

WVL: it's basically "just" MUFLI without the multicolor option and FLIbug GFX (2 spritelayers, one mcol, one hires, plus sprite-colorchanges of all 4 colors and 2 lines of full bitmap color in every char (rest grey)) instead.. plus the 40th char-column in plain AFLI... and a Rasterbar-option, since we now cover the whole width of the screen, hehe.. Read the scrolltext, it's explained in there.. or better check out the editor and hit retuen!
