This demo has kept me baffled for some time. I was curious how that wonderful effect was done so I took a closer look to it using C64Debugger. From what I've come to understand (but I could be wrong here, some $d011 stuff still eludes me) whether or not this is done using FLI is a matter of interpretation. From what I see it triggers a badline condition every rasterline and switched banks, but it's done before cycle 14 (reference: http://zimmers.net/cbmpics/cbm/c64/vic-ii.txt). This means it will redraw the first line of the current row of the bitmap but will update the pointer to the character screen, thus being able to use more colors per raster line. For FLI pictures this effect is of no use because it keeps repeating the first line, but for the splits in this demo it's a really a cool effect.

Or I might be slightly intoxicated and got it all wrong, still a very enjoyable demo :P

Clarence, this is such a lovely demo part with awesome work involved, I really appreciate the time it must take to create this. This is my fave kind of demo on the commodore.. beautiful one screener I can watch for hours... :)

I support what you say, sorry for what might have been seen as a rant but in all honnesty it was just out of admiration and the fact that YUP said - there is no border to border fli pal - I still think there is no such real border to border fli.... but put in other wording... your part is fantastic.... almost solomon finding the hidden upcodes. Emotional breakdown... yeahhh...

@PAL: this feels like demanding an Illusionist to prove and show very slowly that disappearing card trick, you just witnessed, but now from behind and without sleeves on. :)
This is 40 chars FLI. Albeit a very tiny area is possible, which can be repeated, thus enlarged. I'm sure this isn't new, it was implicitly used in effects in the past. One example you know, is the fli effect in Emotional Breakdown. Maybe I'm the first using the behaviour to it's full potential, not sure.

To explain the color density: Say, in a certain char I need only 1 extra-color in the first line, but the next char I need an extra color a pixel below, then again a pixel below in yet another char, etc. Eventually I need fli every line, even though I don't use it's potential in every characters each and every line.

Fantastic!!!!!... waiting... real? FLI? border 2 border?... as you state this one is! Release a new one where it is, where one can see it... Just for the fun of it as you clearly have said it is true fli! I am not being passive aggressive, I am being aggressive because I want so much to see someone prove me wrong... it would be a milestone in the c64 code history.

Ok, some of you have a good point. I'm moving rasterbars in a perfect sinus, every multicolour pixel column has a different y position. The main idea is not to colorcycle, but to draw the splits into a FLI area. Both color data, and bitmap being plotted optimized for the current situation. I'm using FLI mode to it's full extent, so $d800 and $d021 is involved to have as dense colorbars as possible. To avoid color clashes, the rasterbars are optimized (dithered and such), and the sinus adc inside a char is limited. I have done a separate pc tool to test and calculate the most optimal raster density and movement.

TomoAlien: this could have worked in a normal FLI mode aswell, there I could do 37*4 splits in the screen area. That would also be a record, but as a certain guy (called David) in Sweden would mop the floor up with me in his next demo, I had to resort to the super restricted 40 char fli mode to max the split count out. As Slammer pointed out this mode introduces $dd00 into the already crowded timing. I think only another certain guy in Germany (called Roland) respects my 1+ day long optimizazion efforts on the border splits. The timing that ideally writeš d011,d018,dd00 and d020 twice in a 20 cycle rasterspace, results in 2 border rastersplits that still looks acceptable. :)

I like this one.

Oswald: Normal multicolor, I dont think so. I see hints of a mode with an early set badline condition and repeated patterns formed by changing dd00. I guess the key is giving predefined patterns a kind of x movement within each char, but I might be totally wrong since it has been some time since i have done vic coding.

In any case a great part with a really excelent execution and a big thumbs up from here!

without peeking, judging by the looks I'd say its normal multicolor with per char column color changes ;)

The memory map is balls.

WTF did you do? How? I don't even know if it's a real rastersplit or not.

It can't be FLI because there's no FLI-bug.

Looks pretty and well... WTF. Black Magic indeed.
