Summary
Submitted by Brush on 25 May 2024
The nature of technical and scientific progress is such that if something is possible, it will eventually be done. This applies to both tools like the combustion engine and deadly weapons like the atomic bomb. One such tool that has been used for a long time on the C64 scene is the image converter, which takes a true color picture and converts it to one of the VIC graphics modes, with all its limitations.

Initial implementations were quite primitive, and the pictures practically screamed "convert!" Over time, there was some progress in this area, but even a moderately skilled pixel artist could easily produce better results. Today, however, this is all about to change as we present the fruits of Jetboy's work on his next-gen image converter. We believe it is a significant step towards making converted graphics look (almost) like they were hand-pixeled.

The tool itself will be released separately as an online service for everyone to use (and abuse). To demonstrate the power and quality of its output, we are releasing a graphics collection today, consisting of AI-generated pictures that have been converted by Konewka, the tool. None of these images have been hand-retouched, so what you see is the raw output of the conversion process.

We do not wish to take a stance in the "AI is good/bad" debate. We are not graphic artists; we needed test subjects. We are coders, and coding is what we do. The impact of such tools on the scene remains to be seen. Will they become just another tool at our disposal, or will they spell the end of the scene? It's not for us to decide. We certainly hope it will be another step on the path of progress, like many before.
