Adding my two Finnish ¢ from this side of the fence, I agree with most of the criticisms. Going into this demo we intentionally did not create a demo with a plot, narrative, or any particular continuity. We just wanted to present some cool effects each of which stands alone, with no expectation of a high ranking when judged as a production. Think of it more like a love letter of code porn.
This was my first ever linking of a demo and it shows. Again the choice was made to focus on simplicity and reliability over any particular design aesthetic. We have suffered from blown deadlines in the past by losing that focus, so that choice was quite intentional.
Thanks for the praise, and I'm happy to answer any questions about specific routines or techniques at work here.

Agree with whats been said about this release demo being snubbed of a well deserved win in this compo. It's more important who you know and most of all how many you know, to get a good place, in a demo compo!

It was a privilege to meet Proton and Serato at the party. Pal too - my favorite norwegian <3 A shame I didn't find Rock.
Congrats on super cool demo. Each part just has so much to offer that if you blink you might miss it. The technical superiority of the coders in FIG should be apparent to everybody and with awesome graphics and music to back it up and even lift the code to new heights, there is so much good in you guys.
I can't single out favorite piece in this demo - it's just a tour de force in hardcore coding. Well, actually the DYPP scroller is probably my favorite :P

My favourite is the shadow cast thing, surprisingly fast for what it does

That said, i can see why this didn't rank higher... its too slow. Some effects are running really really long (i was pressing space in the first one....)

Awesome demo when it comes to Code and Graphics. Lacks some kind of direction/pace is slow. The music fits the slow pace. Also the switch between the scenes is too harsh, some nice transitions would have helped. Too bad as others already mentioned this deserves a higher rank!

@Trident : in my memory there wasn't the idle line in Beergola Boys, but ofcourse there is and I also see the 3 char bug. How could I miss that?

Now : there is no idle line if the picture is 'compressed' in Y, so if you draw the picture so it looks 'correct' if it is 'compressed' then you can do it like in Pyramage. This is what must be happening and probably also why the picture is not 25 chars high, but a bit less since you have unused data in your bitmap. Once I think I have it figured out, I'll have a looksee in the memory :-)

wvl: my vsps in The Night the Beergola Boys Turned Into the Beergola-Pågarna didn't do particular magic at all, they simply are a bunch of ordinary vsps on top of each other, with one idle line in between each one. implemented simply by calling a piece of vsp code every 9th line. the black idle lines every 9th line are very visible too, even if the picture hides them to some extent. (the 3-character fli bug is somewhat visible too, but also nicely hidden by how the picture looks, and by the fast movement.) but that part was just a quick idea that happened to look really funky with that particular picture. the stuff in this demo is something else.

i have no clue as to how the tech tech in this demo is done, but it looks amazing. my best guess would have been that it is done with one vsp at the top and then some clever way to structure the data dynamically, and no vsps in the actual picture. but it does look like a 3 character nicely hidden fli bug in there. and seeing the discussion here, as well as peacemaker's demo, is certainly sounds like some kind of vsp within the pictures - which definitely sounds like it should be impossible. very very cool! and very very smooth.

pal: i have no idea if you are talking about me, or someone else? i haven't been involved in any discord discussions and have never seen this effect before (i hadn't even seen peacemaker's one :( ). so it would be great if you could clarify your statement, particularly since it sounds like you are making a serious accusation. someone is being accused of stealing something - and my name is somehow dragged into it. i don't like it. would be great if you could clearly state what and who you are talking about so whoever it is has a chance to respond.

(what is true though is that my vsps definitely are way lamer than the pure tech tech magic going on here :D and that this tech tech, as well as peacemaker's demo, really are true wtf moments!)

Pal, with all due respect, the idea is years old, actualy when i was coding Monumentum in 2016, and was already released at "Treasure Chest I". Sure, yours version is improved, but the technique without looking at your code is the same.

WVL... Trident did not do what we do here by smooth sinus and FLI in every 9th line at all... they did a lame version of this and they actually did it after seeing the effect on discord after disqussion of how to nail a problem, they stole the idea and they did it real lame ... The routine in our demo is absolutely WTFmoment on the c64!

OK... so I just saw the demo from Hitmen, which can only shift the picture to the right. In my mind it must mean that in Pyramage the picture is shifted to the left by 1 char each row and then it is possible to shift a char to the left (by doing nothing) or shifting to the right by vsp-ing. I still don't get how the idle state gets killed, but Trident also did that, so why not.

I loaded inn all the saved frames for some of the gfx... I find them very amusing to look at... maybe you like to look at them this way also?

Only 5th place? Come on guys! This demo deserves much higher rating. Being a coder myself i really approciate not only the quality and cleverness of the routines but also their freshness. These are not re-hashes of the old. I'm a bit sad because of that tech-tech, it was not on my todo list. I actually have a working prototype and you've beaten me. My bad. Congratulations! so many cool things in here:

- great clipped line vectors
- the moving light source is awesome
- that techtech is really really wide!
- the ultra smooth dypp is amazing (also cool vsp picture by pal)
- cool rotozoomer

and as always a lot of really good pixels and fonts by pal!

in general the pacing is a little slow and there are some hard cuts. but there is plenty of interesting code here to muse over.

Some really nice ideas in this one. lovely graphics by Pal, which takes it to the desired level. He even did a crab!!
Music on the other hand makes it feel like yester-years. But in a good way after all. Allowing one to stand by a bit and calm down.

When i was watching this demo during stream i didn't liked it much (i was too sleepy i guess). But now when i watched them all deeply, i must say it deserves much higher place.

The antialiased dypp is so smooth! It is unbelivable! I guess that will be the standard now other will try to mimick. Plus there are many other top notch effects, complimented by great art and music. LOVE IT!

It was my favorite when watching the compo, should've been higher ranked imho. Lots of clever tricks in there to ponder about. I think I half understood the waving bitmap, with mid gfx small vsp and clever bitmap distribution. Very cool!

Ah, the colourful mover is in ECM mode. During the demoshow I couldn't see exactly what was shown. The charset is beneath $d000-$d7ff.

Also very clever hiding of the move-one-down problem by bouncing that fish picture underneath the DYPP..

During the compo, someone said the DYPP was interpolated or antialiased, but did they mean increased resolution by making it move at half pixels? That is what it looks like to me seeing it on my own computer. Is that what's going on? It looks sooo smooth.

Also, during the compo I would have sworn the upscroller at the end was in half resolution as well, but that one isn't..
