Wanted: Coder for Super Mario Bros. for Summer Retro Challenge

Wanted: Coder for Super Mario Bros. for Summer Retro Challenge

Wanted: Musician/Sound Designed for Super Mario Bros. for Summer Retro Challenge

WORLD 1-1
http://postimg.org/image/it5vvh25n/

For the January Retro Challenge I created 100% of the graphics and assets necessary to create World 1 of the Super Mario Bros. game.

http://www.wickensonline.co.uk/retrochallenge-2012sc/

For the Summer Challenge (which I expect to run July 1st to 31st 2015), I would really love to team up with a coder, and audio dude (or dudette) and see how much of this can be done in a month.

The project would help generate some exposure and I trended towards updates once or twice a week. So along with coding, posting progress information would be expected.

I am not a coder, but am capable of simple tasks and am willing to help where I can, also I would spend the month completing the balance of the graphics. Most of the graphics have been made (95%+), and basically just the colours need to be reduced to work with the MC Char Map mode. I would also be responsible for posting our progress to a blog site and tweet to Retro Challenge.

If anyone is interested in month of retro craziness please feel free message me or reply to this thread.

Thank you,
Rocky.

Lol. Totally! I used to be worried about being sued.

I am just a big fan of the Commodore and growing up I couldn't afford a Nintendo. I was about 11 at the time when I came up with the idea to port the game. But I didn't have the means to make this project come true, but I have continued to work on my graphics skills (for many many years) and would love to see this through.

Sorry, I think you didn't get my joke. IIRC Gianna Sisters was taken off the shelves shortly after release, because it was a pretty blatant ripoff of Super Mario Bros. with some minor changes.

I'm willing to make music for this project with help from a friend who makes the instruments on all my C64 productions.
He is pretty much busy with his work so we probably need more time than a month.
Is this possible?

@Yogibear: I am interesred to see what can be done in a month but I don't expect a finished product. I think I good minimum expectation would be to complete the first level. That would be proof of concept for the scrolling, enemy and hero behavior, along with a level's worth of music and sfx

@rockasoo: You don't expect a finished product? When should it be finished then?
Do you have an idea for the level tune? A cover or an original tune?
SFX must be made by a friend of mine.
I already did a Super Mario SID tune which can be found here:
http://hvsc.de/
/MUSICIANS/W/Wijnhoven_Joachim/Super_Mario_Land.sid
I could make a version of this with better instruments or what do you want?

That's not how a game is ported. You don't work level by level. And re-implementing game code seems like a stupid idea, it's never gonna feel like Mario then.

I'd rather wait for this to be finished: https://www.flickr.com/photos/95918666@N08/8754036704/

In case you don't know already Nintendo decided recently — after all these years — to actually start making games for other platforms. Mostly the mobile ones of course, given Nintendo's general loss of market shares the last three years. At least that is one step closer to the possibility of getting an official Nintendo version for the C64. ;)

@Wanax: There is no rush to complete anything. If you are interested, I'd be honored to have you on board.

@Yogi: I checked out your music and it's fantastic.

@Mr.SID: I am sorry if I have offended you somehow. Full disclosure, I have NO idea what I am doing. I just make graphics - that's why I am consulting with programmers. That preview looks great, of course. Zero Paige is AMAZING.

@Frantic: We can only hope that Nintendo begins to port the classics to the C64. :D We can dream!

@Yogibear: Would you be interested in doing the SMB1 World 1-1 music and yes you would have until end of July. The only additional information would be some documentation on how you created the tune.

As this is meant to be a port, an accurate interpretation of the audio is preferable.

I understand that might not be so novel or interesting to the C64 scene but the documentation will be for a broader *retro* audience.

If that is something you and Roland would like to do, you two are the guys. :)

A good game/demo needs people who deliver. The only reasons why projects fail nowadays.

But you want SMB1 World 1-1 music in Gameboy style so why should I make a new version?

I apologize for the confusion. I do not wish to make a Gameboy-style game. (Well, not for THIS project).

I know in the Lemon forums, I had mentioned the possibility of doing this but mostly because I was finding it difficult to work with Char Mode MC in a visually pleasing fashion. Thankfully Saul12, fx, Mase, and enthusi and a few others were very helpful.

So I would like the C64 to behave as the Nintendo (obviously that's not *REALLY* possible but it's the challenge).

Thanks,
Rocky.

What kind of music of which platform do you want?
Maybe you can send a YouTube film of what you want?

Hey rockasoo,

OK! Probably got mixed up with the GB tune. Now it's perfectly clear! :)

Why not use this one? I couldn't do it better: (no room for 4th percussion track)
/MUSICIANS/M/Morton_Adam/Super_Mario_Brothers.sid

If you want it exactly like the original you get this:
/MUSICIANS/M/MovieMovies1/Super_Mario_Bros_2SID.sid
But that is in 6 channels or do you want that?
