Event id #3201 : Crack Intro Music Competition 2022
As long years have passed since the last time, getting officially blessed by Didi/Laxity, I have a great pleasure to launch another edition of Crack Intro Music Competition. Get acquainted with the rules below and let's go!
Basic Info:
- Deadline for entry submission is August 14, 2022 at 23:59:59 (11:59:59 pm).
- Voting closes one week later at August 21, 2022 at 23:59:59 (11:59:59 pm).
- Voting platform is CSDb but eventually votes will be processed with a trusty algorithm to weed out CSDb vigilantes as much as possible. No voting system is perfect but god knows I really tried :D
- As usual the main prize is CSDb fame and prestige but this time Top 10 entries will also be compiled as a nice oldschool cracktro themed music disk.
Rules:
- Multiple entries per musician are allowed - no limit here, go with the flow!
- Entry must be handed in as executable .prg (which might be embedded in .t64 or .d64) and optionally .sid. Preferably both ;)
- Max. playtime is strictly up to 1:02 min. at PAL rate, then tune must loop to any desired point. These 2 seconds extra are really the last resort so don't push it ;)
- Max. size is $1000/4096 bytes for music routine and content (preferably located in memory at $1000-$2000).
- Single speed only.
- Tune should sound as acceptable as possible on all SID models so pay attention to filtering and usage of combined waveforms ($31, $61, $71 won't work well on 6581). That said, you may set any SID model you prefer in .sid file but be sure some curious people will check it on various revisions ;)
- Music entries cannot be used in any cracktro or similar production before or during the compo (and its voting phase). So, dear crackers, hold your horses this time ;)
- This time no regular covers are allowed at all. Contestants might make at most a delicate nod to some cult cracktro theme.
- Visuals should be as modest as possible, not to distract voters from the essence which is audio content.
Rule set might expand if compo related discussion leads to it. I hope not :D
Good luck and have fun! |

Uh, intro tunes. Among all modern multispeed tunes, demo tunes, game tunes and whatnot, intro tunes are still the king. Can't wait to lay my ears on these. |

Uhm, yeah. Agreed. The quality of submitted tracks is insane. This seems to be the tendency at demoparties too, just think about last years' Transmission parties (both), Revision, Gubbdata and Moonshine Dragons too. I bow to you, SID musicians, thank you for being active and creating tasty SID music <3 |

A lot of tunes in already, but quite a bunch I'd say "topic missed" even if technical execution may be good. I have coded a lot of crack intros yet and checked though all entries until now. There are very few I could imagine building a crack intro upon. Sorry if I spoil the hooray spirit... maybe my imagination is just too limited...
Well, just go on and have fun that's the prime directive here... ;-) |

Sure, everyone's got their taste and I also wouldn't do a cracktro with each and every tune just because it's short or eats litle RAM/raster time. But
Quoting Didi... very few I could imagine building a crack intro upon. ...
VERY? seems a little big, maybe you just lack imagination :)
But as Jammer sez, punish uncracklike stuff by heavily downvoting it (with 8s and 9s, they are the new 2s and 1s, you know) |

Ahahaha too true. People really do need to be less afraid to throw around sixes and sevens, and god forbid anyone votes 5 for something that they don't like as much as ten other entries in the same compo. |

As I just have noticed, this is not just a kind request but even a compo _rule_, I can only say, it's plain stupid and very unlike any other CSDb standalone competitions. Normally, it is: Has not been released/used before entering the compo +++ PERIOD +++. Once it's out there, how can you stop people from using it. In fact, someone could even sabotage other people's entries by releasing some cheap fake release with their music before voting has closed. |

Same case was 5 years ago and then I seriously considered withdrawing my entry because of that shit. We'll probably ignore block on such cracktros during the compo and next time it will be phrased smarter. |

My 2p: Any rule that cannot be enforced by the entrants themselves cannot be a rule. More of a kind request to the rest of the scene, at best. But this also implies that a random scener who likes the tune and wants to use it in their prod would somehow know to read the rules and wishes of a compo the tune happened to be released in, which they probably won't. |

IMHO there are so, so many great entries in this compo (and more just keeps on coming!) that it could we worth reconsidering the size of the music disk? Maybe Top 20? Or go wild: all top voted ones, as many as fits on a single disk side?
Preferably with a fully featured player too, with options to pick any tune from a list, ability to auto-advance and to loop (maybe even loop for X minutes until auto-advancing), random play, repeats etc. familiar features from The Real Music Players(tm) |

*** VOTING PHASE ***
which ends August 21, 2022 at 23:59:59 (11:59:59 pm).
I'd only like to remind that votes are collected from CSDb but eventually processed with custom formula which was already used during 25Hz and '83 compo. There are no arbitrary weights applied but votes are counted exponentially instead. So one vote counts as one, two votes count as four, four votes count as sixteen etc. If you wanna fair results - take your time to vote on every entry - the more the merrier ;)
Have fun!
BTW. Votepack and DeepSID playlist in the making ;) |

Eggshell turned out too big as a file which I sadly overlooked when it was the right time :( Archmage withdrew it on that basis. Blu1min was withdrawn by Adam due to his personal reasons. I thought both entries will remain flagged as out of compo but authors decided to make them compo unrelated which I absolutely respect.

Thanks for the hint. Don't know if my last (lib)sidplayfp build is from AUR or made by myself and in both cases: probably good to check if it's on par with upstream.

Yeah, good idea to give it a try on 8580. I'm always unsure what to do with tunes that the creators themselves flagged as 6581 and do not sound good on any emulators I have here. In case of this compo "both SIDs" were a requirement anyway, so it seems that this is the way to go. |

Compatibility with old/new sid is important prerequisite but I haven't made it a subject for withdrawal as I cannot claim objectively what sounds right and according to author's attempts. Hence I prefer to leave it to the collective audience judgement. All in all, if you find anything sound shitty on certain config, it's perfectly normal to include it in your final vote. And it's as perfectly normal that we might disagree here :D |

Hi, I don't have any real machine here anymore, so the 6581 I had done Xinylights for was in emulator. I noticed that emulation on deepsid sounds a lot different.
I added a youtubelink for the emu-recording, it was intended to be heavily distorted on the low filterend.

I made my tune also in VICE (3.6.1) with 8580 emulation. It sounds a little different in SID players. The filter sweep does not sound right at all. I had no time left to test it on the real thing or on other emulators/players. Gotta live with that now. :-)
So, the intended "sound" for my tune is how it sounds inside VICE with 8580 emulation. |

Please *always* test against hardware. That it sounds different in another emulator means nothing. And if you find actual problems, please report a bug!

May I suggest to remove (or upscale) the 1 minute rule the next time? It makes it easier to arrange something, imo. Some speeds just don't work well, even with the extra 2 seconds slack. |
