Which modern SID musicians favour the 6581 over the 8580?
I've only got an old breadbin with the 6581 at the moment, and it seems whenever I find a great new track it sounds shitty on my SID because it was made for the new one instead... :(
There must be some peeps still pushing the 6581, surely! But who are they?
When I bought my old C64 I was under the impression that the old SID was favoured - for example, the sampled speech in Greenrunner and Redrunner by Alexi Eeben sound really muffled (to me) on the 8580... Was I mistaken?
Any suggestions for 6581 tracks to check would be appreciated!

Yeah, been checking some of his stuff :)
The older chip doesn't seem to be able to pull off the insane levels of bass that the 8580 is capable of. I assume that is the attraction...

I like 'em both. Some like it hot and some like it cool. I like it hot and cool.
What I DONT'T like is that there are two models and that they are different due to all the hassle that creates...

My way of dealing with the "hassle": Actually I have a Stereo-in-SID double-mono jumpered with 6581 PLUS 8580 in my main machine.
BTW: Not all of the modern 8580 suck on the 6581 though it's true that they quite frequently lack bass and depending on the used filter technique CAN sound a little underwater-like. On the other hand, the 1980s classix composed on 6581 - as everybody knows - may have very silent samples on an unmodded 8580 though there are quite a few solutions to that problem (DigiHack).
But BTT: Aren't there more musicians than only rambones and Jeff who still compose for 6581? |

Hein´s tracks usually sound fine on both chip revisions. Other musicians that come to mind are DRAX, JT, Geir Tjelta, Laxity, NE7 and the Prosonix guys. Dalezy used to rape the old chip exclusively until recently.
My tunes sound awful on the old chip since I make extensive use of filtertype switching and quite deep cutoff values. |

Thanks for this guys - really informative.
I've realised now that the majority of SIDs contain info regarding what chip it was made on, and therefore I can tell more or less if they will favour my 6581.
I guess the obvious solution for me is to have one of each machine; a C64c and a breadbin.
What year/revision did the C64c definitely stop having the 6581 in? I've heard that they continued to stuff the new Amiga style shells with older boards and components for a while before moving over to the revision C board and 8580 exclusively... |
