Here are the final results for the compo. Interestingly short before voting deadline some 1 votes appeared on several entries and just vanished a few minutes later.
Anyways thanks to all participants and a special thank to bepp for providing the overview page again.

To support voting, I reused the gallery view I made for the logo compo and changed some parameters. Head over to http://www.triad.se/font/ to get your voting done! :)

With 32 attendants, each entry should have at least that amount of votes. It'd be great if each participant would be so kind to vote for each entry. I think it is our responsibility, as participants, to drive the compo to a fair voting :) Otherwise, there should never be a compo again where voting is based on CSDb ratings.

Here are some intermediate rankings compiled earlier this day.
You still have time until August 24, 2013 at 23:59:59 (11:59:59 pm) CEST to place your votes.
Some entries have very few votes which is bad to have a fair result at the end. So please place your votes!
@ xIII/WOW: I guess I made a number twist when compiling the last rankings. Sorry.

I think the ranking are not correct but I understand its not the final rankings.
My font 'freehand' is in 30th spot with 6.8 points but it never got lower CSDB points then 8.5.

I think there was no font ever done using this technique.

I know what Didi does and I like it, even Didi do not intend this. I hope to see this and the other competitions every year now and some more!

Changed the rules a bit due to too much confusion with the color rules. Hope this makes things clear now.

@The USER: It's not allowed to use different colors within a single HiRes char in the presentation.

So my question here is, is it allowed to colorize the presentation screen? And it is only forbidden to mix Hires and Multicolor through the coloram?

I would love it too, if the color restrictions would go away next time. It was standard to design an font (even in scrollers) halved horizontaly by the colorram. And if you show your work without an good example, the audience could only hardly decide if it is better than another. The most user will vote without downloading and only decide by the screenshot and favourite group anyway.

@Didi: Yes, I've made many 4x4 and bigger fonts in a level editor, it was not called 'bigger than 2x2 font editor'.

Alas, was just trying, maybe next charset compo you'll reconsider the mixed multi/hires mode, but that does require color RAM. :)

User Comment
Submitted by Didi on 10 July 2013
@Hein: Maybe. But we are not talking about designing levels here. It's about making something readable using letters.
@All: Continue having fun about digging for holes in the rules instead of doing something reasonable. It's been always easier to criticise other's work than producing something on your own. I tried to give a clear ruleset as always. Accept them, or don't participate. Especially with fonts it might be hard to create something unique after all the years.

playing around with standard charset mode (including the glorious mixed multi/hires mode) is what many (level) editors support, out of the box. CharPad V1.8.3 for instance.

User Comment
Submitted by Didi on 10 July 2013
This competition is about the charsets/fonts. Animation and playing around with colors is what a coder makes out of them.

"Only simple hires or multicolor mode is allowed (no color splits or different color RAM settings)."

Why no to color RAM, but yes to sprites? I think playing with color RAM (in charset mode) is a great enrichment for a digital designer on c64.

Out of curiosity as I always liked animated charset characters though they might be waste of space on the $0800: allowed?
A displayer would likely show at least such things as effect next to the full charset though, hm? :)

This compo is based on a proposal by The USER and I never heard about an event like this, so why not have some fun with it.

THE RULES:
- Has to fit into one charset block ($0800 bytes)
- Has to contain at least all 26 letters to write english language + blank. Other chars are optional.
- Has to be readable.
- Dimensions are free (1x1, 2x2, 1x4, etc.)
- May be charset mode or even sprites.
- Only simple hires or multicolor mode is allowed (no color splits or different color RAM settings).

* No coded splits are allowed (e.g. changes in $d021).
* Different color RAM settings for HiRes fonts are OK in the advanced presentation but the font has to be displayed once completely in single color, that means 1 complete letter in 1 color only.
* No mixed HiRes/Multicolor Charsets.
- Should be posted as executable file with a displayer that shows all chars. (Please no fancy movements, raster underlays, color splits, animations, etc. This is no coding compo.)
- Ripping other's charsets or using derivates of the ROM charset is lame. Please only post own work.
- Compo entries are not allowed to have been used in any public production before.
- Max. 3 entries per participant. Entries might be taken back from the compo until deadline. That means if you want to remove one of your works from the compo to make space for another entry from you, this can be done until deadline.

Deadline for entry submission is August 17, 2013 at 23:59:59 (11:59:59 pm) CEST.
Voting closes one week later at August 24, 2013 at 23:59:59 (11:59:59 pm) CEST.
Voting platform is CSDb, therefore entries have to be posted here.
Entries will be ranked by weighted average of CSDb votes. Entries with the same weighted average are ranked by their percentages of 10s, 9s, etc.

No prices to win, just the fame.

Happy pixeling!
