Added the art from this demo to C64GFX.com recently. Some stunning pieces - and a huge effort here from Facet/G*P (including that amazing opening falling rock logo artwork). https://c64gfx.com/release/232976

After recent discussions on missing attributions on Wonderland 14, I'd love to see the full credits for side 2 of Next Level :-) .. right now the GFX for side 2 are credited to Mahoney.

As usual, arriving a bit late to the party. That's truly some next-level shit. +1

Awesome work. Enjoyed every second of it. And the park with the 100 game snippets blew my mind...

Well deserved winner. In the morning while having breakfast with Bitbreaker in the Hotel, I am still puzzled on how he could sit there fully relaxed and chilled when he knew what a killer demo he had in his pocket! ;-) Congratulations to the whole team, this is outstanding, amazing!

A lot if not everything was already said about this demo. It has it all, the music, the 100 games, and the fun vibe. But being a coder I can't help myself to repeat what i said during the compo: the best demo on X'23 was side 3 of Next Level. I can watch it looped. For hours. So a perfect demo and a perfect side. Congratulations to everybody involved.
p.s. Elysium does not feel we deserve to get greeted 2 times (we're in North Africa and South Asia) but we're flattered :)

@wysiwtf: THCMod is mainly a vessel for sotware mixing of digi channels - it can have different playback methods assigned. Credits and Insomnia use Mahoney's playback which is in fact $d418 deluxe - it allows for approx. 6-7bit resolution hence the noise ;) LMan's end tune uses channel 3 triangle waveform hence samples are 8bit and can be filtered to sound more smooth.

So what to say about this X23 demo.. Every part is just made very much "over the top" to impress the minds of the viewer and make them dizzy in "how is this possible" Great new Performers to in this demo like Axis and Facet!
100 games part is now very great how it ended up!! A true C64 allstar demo! Keep doing X demos Mahoney & Co! Just amazing!

Submitted by wysiwtf on 23 June 2023
Somehow songs using the THCM engine produce a lot of noise when playing samples, other demos (i.e. wonderland) dont do that and play fine.
Its 8580, any ideas?

Worthy winning performance. The music notches the top. Simply stunning throughout. The GEOS part is just the best and funniest turn disk part ever made. Including the music. And I want a follow-up with 100 more recent games now please (killing 100 more Pokémons on the go)!

This is without a doubt one of the most innovative demos ever made for the C64, if not the flagship demo. Unfortunately, I didn't manage to recognize all the games shown in it. In any case, it is a journey through time and should not be missing in any collection.

This demo can also be watched as part in our livestream at 00:08:40 which also include a "Best of X2023 Demoparty" special part. :-)

I love this demo! It has that unique Performers vibe in every possible way. If I was to point out one thing that really, truly stands out in this one, it would have to be the music. Especially Jammer made a jawdropping effort on this one. Next, I would have to say the Geos turn disk part. I am a sucker for explicit and uncompromising humor and this one really nails it in every possible way. I love that BitBreaker and the guys really picked up the puns - lovingly as intended - that they have been subject of through the years. My only regret is that I didn't give this as much love as I wanted to, but I guess we just cannot do everything our hearts want us to do. So, this really was a perfect winner for X. I cannot see how any other demo would or should have challenged this. Finally we have a demo worthy to take the throne from Edge of Disgrace - to some degree. I still feel there is a shitload of polish that could move this demo from a clean 9.9 to a perfect 10, but that's me and I guess that's why I was also invited to participate - to provide just that. If only I had had the time :)
Guys, you fully and totally deserve to be crowned the kings of the only true demoscene ... for now ;) <3

Like many no doubt, i have been watching Next Level some more ^_^
I really do like the Greets part. The multi directional parallax scrolling over which hovers a large cloud logo during which plays happy music, takes me back to my Snes days, and the game which i was very fond of called Pop'n Twinbee. What i was not aware of, until the other day, was the fact that the map is in the shape of planet Earth.

Thank God I'm not a democoder, how come an incoming demo will beat this?

Some demos stayed a while as #1 at this chart, this seems to stay forever.

And yes, I feel it's a valid reason to break with someone I know, who voted other than 10 here. :)

Crazy.

I don't know how the 100 games part is done but if I had to guess... hack Vice into a "Vic/Sid" recorder that saves register writes and keeps track of memory access and saves that too, and then come up with a way of compressing it and playing it back in realtime... but then how the f**k could you put more stuff on top? Maybe an extra step that figured out which sprites where free at which raster lines?

This demo is nothing short of amazing! A worthy winner. Mahoney explained how he did the 100 games part and I still don't fully get it. Please Pex, enlighten us! And just a few minutes before this demo came on, I said to Slaygon: "No one is doing vectors these days." I'm a sucker for vectors so guess if I was glad to see bloody vectors on the screen! Are they in realtime? Thinking of the name of the demo they must be. Plus, any demo with game references is a winner in my book. Well done all involved! I look forward seeing Hedning or any of the other CSDb admins add the credits from all the games featured in this demo. :)

Amazing parts and some with perfected digi tunes! The 100 games. just FTW, how did you even come up with such a mad IDEA? I am totally mind blown, Pex you are a scene geenious period. There is so much great stuff in this demo! I am amazed so finally Performers took the 1 st prize! Congratulations to the whole team \o/

The 100-games part shocked me and I really liked to see how calm Mahoney was watching this, sitting only a few metres away from us :-) . It must have been a blast to see his own work with all the people in the room *screaming* for enthusiasm... and then quite some legends by themeselves came to bow.

Apart from the coderspecs, the fun with the parts and the overall mood was brilliant, too.

C'grats for the win! This demo is literally next level.

I was not ready for what happened during the demo compo. I was thinking, it will be a demoscene meeting. Well, it ended up to be C64 world championship with massive releases. Clash of the titans. The strongest demo compo ever in my opinion.

"I strongly recommend to disqualify this release as obviously most of the effects are simply not possible on the C64.
"

Agree with that comment. It's just out of this world amazing. For peace of mind I need to go through every part with c64 debugger to understand how this it happening in the first place.

There's SO MUCH GOODNESS in this one I don't even know where to start. Well, the shortest fitting comment on this is best done by requoting the name of the demo: next level!

The 100games-part stood out. This is not only a demo-part, this is digital art taken to some uber-next level. I mean it!

The mc bitmap scroller was interesting. Reading that some LDA/STA/STA-trick is involved reminded me that when Graphics Scrollection 2 was released, I assumed that such an approach was used to upscroll the bitmaps at that high speed. Did never check it out, but here, for sideway scrolling, it works like a bliss:)

Also all other parts are pure madness; I might come back and continue commenting on them...

Total demo carnage. After some consideration, I really think that this was my personal favourite of the compo, and the bar was high beyond belief. You simply blew the roof off the party hall with this one. To the sound team, I take off my hat, and then I set it on fire and wave it around.

Aloha Mahoney!

You are now the beautifully creative architect of the most satisfying strange loop I have ever experienced:

The C64 performing (pun intended) its very own "100 Most Beloved Games" "video" in a clarity and with an authenticity no YT one can ever reach... ;-D

Thank you.

Last comment from me: that 2-pixel scroller from Knut.. I just delved in to see what it's doing. Nice! No VSP, as you say.

People might not realise what this means - which makes the coder's work even more special .. as many at X will probably just think "ah, another bitmap scroller" .. that it's triple buffered and seems to be doing LDA/STA/STA instead of the traditional DB with LDA/STA is cunning.

Also explains why the pic is a bit special - presumably it needed to be something that compressed nicely since you must be burning ~28k just for your triple buffering!

Excellent work again. Coders need more bigging-up for these things!

So, I just found out that the vector graphic parts that I loved in this one were Bitbreakers..! Awesome work there! I'd wrongly assumed these were Axis' as, for a long time, Axis had been my #1 rated coder.

Anyway, apologies Bitbreaker - and congrats on the amazing work!

it's beyond me how much work and skill had to go into this. all those transitions, shitload of little details... this isn't an eye-candy, it's the whole shop. albeit i had my personal two highlights somewhere else (Hiraeth + W14 endpart), i'm convinced this should and indeed did win perhaps the strongest democompo ever :)

That was overwhelmingly good. The various beautiful vector scenes may be the highlight code wise, but the attention to detail, the cheekiness and humor does equally great impression. Loved the 'chaotic' part at the end of side 1 as well!

Great demo, guys! Snagging Axis clearly was an excellent move - best effect in the Demo IMO!

Music throughout is fantastic. Nice to see the charset-D800-scroll-madness effect evolving.

And .. so much love for G*P's Mighty Hunter and Facet! Of course, both are fantastic.

Great great demo, a worthy winner for sure! As with others', I wonder whether it could be less than 4 disks .. but that's all I have ;-) (we focused on getting our own demo down to 2 sides after Jammer crowned us the disk-swap kings for Memento Mori - you guys can fight for that crown with Bonzai and others this year ;p).

Summary: AMAZING. Can't wait to see what you bring to X2024 :-)
