Expect the 2nd issue to have a lot more text-balance. I wanna get a little bit from every direction for each issue but ultimately I rely on those submitting the text.

hein, both intro tunes you did are hands down your best so far. ever. even taking both trans*from tunes in consideration, which are in a league of their own themselves. egyptian is my fav btw

oh and about the mag, it rocks, but a bit too much g*p infested. they weren't *that* important.

This is a Mag, not a demo. Funny to see it's the "usual suspects" again! <:-)
As for Char-editors that can do hires and Mcol at once: Manfred Trenz Turrican-Tools can do that. And the SSI-dudes must also have used something to make their most awesome gfx in their RPGs... Curse of the Azure Bonds, Pool of Radiance, Gateway to the Savage Frontier, you know the deal... all enemy/character graphics are charset (haha, what a surprise, eh? ;-) with colormap only!

As for the production itself: VERY good read, awesome design. That Burka Intro from Hein in the Goodies section just blew me away, the gfx kick *serious* ass, this is the female version of the legendary Last Ninja eyes, in all its perfection!
Also nice doublespeed tune in Rock SID, Herbie would be proud of you! ;-)
As for the 8x8 in the Intro: It's strange, normally i don't like bigpixel stuff, too, especially 8x8. But with Heins strangely looking Char-Palette and the writing above and below it looks as if the chunkiness was part of the design, kinda like a Pixellate filter you add to your PC-Demo, so that's okay with me! ;-)

Yes. Issue #2 is on the way. Each issue has a ancient theme supported by the main music, first issue was "Roman", next issue is... well, you'll just have to wait and see... Issue #2 is planned for release in the next few months, possibly at the X'2006 event in October.

Big job now is obtaining decent text about experiences in the older days (80s and early 90s). If anyone can help, please drop me a mail or PM.

This is the most insanely good read in years. Anybody downloading an emulator should be forced to read this to understand where the scene is coming from... Really this is more like a disk book than a diskmag and that's great. If diskmags want to survive they'll need to do things like this.

Oswald, in the forum you mention this Graphic Editor (J.Fox) editor.. still the same you are talking about??? because we couldn't find an editor at all, besides Cadavers editor, that can handle the hires nybbles. Only, Cadaver's editor uses 4x4 blocks, it would be a pain in the butt to create a nice circle, even impossible, since there's not enough blocks available. So, I used Photoshop to export a raw texture, with indexed palet, each byte referring to a character..

hein, I cannot find the editor on the net I've mentioned. It can do hires and multi chars for granted.

krill, why would it look ugly if texture pixels would be bigger on screen than screen pixels? check some amiga rotzoomers.

Now, this is a diskmag for me, being a fart from the old crackingscene, and the quality gave me goosebumps all over. Reminds me of how it used to feel reading diskmags such as Mamba, Shock or Propaganda. Truly impressive work - I loved it. Especially the Scenetown article where Newscopy described the schoolyard swapping days was enjoyable. I could relate too much! (:

Nice pissing contest.. Quite fitting that the font is orange/brown :). Oh.. An most important: Great magazine, a big thumbs up (in multi color - zoomed AND shrinked.. choose for yourself) to all involved!

Oswald: Zoomers that don't shrink look crappy, 8x8 is low-res enough. And to my eyes this one looks rather smooth compared to other 8x8 zoomers, not to mention the high mathematical accuracy. And as i said, the arabian flavour has rather low pixel colour frequencies, i wouldn't call that flicker.
Besides, the effect was done in maybe one or two days, it was the design around it that took weeks, as usual.
And it's no demo - because of the scroller and the font it uses there was no space for a mipmap.

first of all awesome outfit, and the content is very-very good. Havent read so far articles of the past that felt so true.

some minor complaints about the outfit: I dont like the brown borders, looks cheap and poor, it only gives a feeling of a shrinked screen. When pushing buttons they get too small. this feels oddly ridiculous :). When loading a new music cursor moves are disabled, this feels like loosing control / freeze. I'd rather make the buttons greyscale for the load time, and a disability of pushing them.

I know that Krill have put a lot of effort into the zoomer, but sadly I must agree with HCL, the fx didnt turned out well.. :( A zoomer instead of a shrinker would worked better (no flickering)

secondly

hein&krill: the editor is called graphic editor (cracked by transcom, the one I have on disk..). It has a char AND playfield editor, where the playfield dimensions are variable, AND you can define a d800 color for each char. (besides the sprite editor and the gazillion of functions it supports. clearly the best all purpose sprite&char editor)

@HCL: Like Krill said, a proper singlecolour/multicolour editor we could not find. Besides, why use all 256 chars? It's like asking a gfx- artist to draw a rainbow.

HCL: oh well, the statement in +H2K is now 6 years old. Also you cannot exactly say you're innocent in producing 8x8 rotozoomers :D
Also the arabian flavour of the intro does not flicker very much and looks rather smooth, IMHO, as opposed to the roman one.
But why do you say the charset is hardly used? My original idea was to have mixed mc and hires chars, since that is perfectly possible with the algorithm used. Turns out that there is no suitable editor for that purpose, and i didn't bother making one. So in the end "only" 128 out of 256 chars were used.
Which is a good thing, since in the end the largest chunk of free memory was something like 8 to 16 bytes or so.

This is for me the best mag released in 2006, surely this mag is the most importend mag released in C64 history. When you was involved backdays in the old scene, than brings this mag thoughts back into your mind that you have maybe forgotten, and you can get maybe a feeling back like in the old days. You want understand how all began, than is this mag and the one´s that coming in the future, the black book for the C64 scene. Congratulations for all people that worked on this mag!

..and some words about the intro, as I can't read anyways :).

First of all, "big pixels suxx" as Krill stated in +h2k. Flicker hell. But a bigger effort was appearantly put on the design and the fading of the effect, which is really nice!! The rotating graphics puzzles me alot. Plain mc-chars are used, but the font is hardly used. Why? Ok, maybe it wouldn't have added much, i don't know. All in all, very nice looking and sounding, despite the *ugly* effect >:).
