codebase64.org - again!

Hello!

Just wanted to inform you all that I was kindly offered to move the wiki to another server and I decided to do this, because of some minor technical issues with the previous one. That means:

the C64 codebase wiki changed servers again! :)

This time everything seems to work as expected (including registration). Note that:

- The URL has changed once again (to codebase64.org).
- You are now required to register in order to modify or add contents (but reading is open for everyone of course). This is due to the results of the poll that was performed on the wiki where a clear majority wanted it to work this way. This also has the good side effect of making it visible who added what and so on.
- Users that tried to register on the previous server are added in the userlist, and should recieve email notifications about that. Note that you can change the passwords assigned to you if you want to do that. (Press the "Update Profile" button when logged in.)

Concerning the future of the wiki, I will now look into the possibilities and options for adding a discussion forum to the wiki.

I also want to say thank you to all the people that added info so far. They way I see it, there is quite a lot of stuff in there now!

So, now go on and add stuff again. ;)

Heh. Funny actaully as I went to check out the site this morning and noticed the link had changed.

If you do decide to include a wiki forum, make sure it is highly secured and include filters to remove any inappropriate text ;)

Today a new section was added to the wiki with contents from magazines. So far it contains the C= Hacking and DisC=overy magazines, but it is also intended to hold articles from real C64 diskmags.

Note that this kind of material should be handled with extra care, since it was once released as "finished products" and not intended for the possibilities of continous modifications in wikis. In short; any modifications to contents in this section of the wiki should be in the form of footnotes (which is added by using double parenteses around the text you want to add).

By the way.. Are you people sure that you think it was such a good idea to require registration before people could contribute to the codebase wiki? (I refer to the poll that was on the site about this question). I am not sure, since the activity dropped to zero (almost) since that requirement got into effect.

I am thinking about whether I should change this back or not. (Security issues are not that pressing, since the site is backed up and so on.)

Yeah, I thought so too (and that is not surprising), but still I found it a bit... noteworthy, or something, that the drop off effect occured in pretty much direct temporal connection with the registration-requirement.

I think its a brilliant idea the codebase, it just needs a little more beef in form of more articles and sourcecodes.

@oswald: In fact, I am pretty much of the same opinion as you. Just wanted to re-activate this thread, in order to remind people about the site. For example, I neglected to say that the (previous) wiki server was down for several days at the same time as I switched servers. Hehe.. :)

6502.org told me it was OK to mirror relevant routines on the codebase, and.. well.. yeah. I'll probably fix that some day. BUT, I still think original contents is the main thing to focus on for the wiki.

Ok, so I finally found the time to look into the Forum issue, and now it is possible to discuss each page (excluding the start page in each section) directly at the bottom of the page. Just like when editing contents in general, you are required to log in to be able to post in those discussions.

I hope this makes some people happy here, since I did this because some of you requested it. Now use this function with care, and note that I have the possibility to remove any fucked up mongo posts, so behave in there OK!? :)

There are two single rules for the discussions:

#1 - stay on topic!
#2 - Don't whine on others for their errors. Fix them yourself. The codebase is a collective endeavour.

I wanted to make "latest codebase64 additions" info block at c64.sk so it will bug more people to check it more often. Will do it asap.

I think demo sources without comments doesnt really helps beginners. What I am trying to achieve is to give a toolbox. A series of articles about how to calc 3d rotation, how to draw lines, how to do fli, how to do fpp, etc etc etc. then one can build from those whatever effect he dreams up.

so please write articles about all that basic routines, instead of adding several hundreds line of sources without comments.

Good idea. It's about time that someone does actually explain how particular effects work, literally. Usually it's always a case of people just coding the routine in to make sure it works but don't really have time to know HOW it works. Having explanations of these on the site will be a great help for many new people.

Why CET and not GMT/UTC? Most people know their own time relative to GMT. CET would take more guessing/work. Since people can register allow a profile time setting.

@oswald: Right now I cannot really do anything since I am travelling for the moment. Will be back in a week or so and then I will have a look at it. The current server is located in the US, but I guess it will be possible to manage the clock issue somehow.

Checked the codebase now and noticed all the nice contributions added recently. NICE!

I noticed that the raster IRQ is explained in more than one article. In the future, we might want to organise article (by removing or adding parts) in such a way that if you read a few, you aren't reading the same thing over and over.

Perhaps it is a good idea to make a Tutorial about self modifying code if you want with samples (small, big, bigger...), beause it is often used in Demo Codes an in common ml literature it is not explained very good !

imho it was a really bad idea to make different pages for "sourcecodes" and "articles", for exactly that reason. afterall, every good article should come with example code anyway - and every good example source should be well commented. also the index page for each are very similar.

i think it would be better to have one index page that links to both, articles and sources, to avoid a lot of duplication.

we need articles & sourcecodes united. then a note behind each title wether it has explanations or not. article or not. plain source or not.

could be a bit messy in the beginning maybe, but as soon as a certain useful structure has been found out it should be much better than it is now

Ok, so now I have merged the two sections (sourcecode and articles). Since this, of course, resulted in a very huge bloated page, I have now also made an attempt to give more structure to wiki. In fact, I restructured the whole wiki A LOT. I hope you find it useful. Feedback is welcome, and as usual, feel free to edit things yourself.

The "VIC and Demo Coding" section is currently quite messy, as I just merged these sections from the previous pages. If someone feels like structuring this page a little better, it would be very welcome.

I also want to say that I find it very inspiring with all these added articles from various people during the last week. Thanks a lot for these!
