Undoubtable System 3 are the kings of making games for the C64, just take a look at these classics if you weren't impressed yet:
International Karate
IK+
The Last Ninja 1, 2, Remix, 3
Dominator
Myth - Hystory in the making
Flimbo's Quest
Tusker
Turbo Charge
Also, Thalamus (and especially APEX) are worth being mentioned.

Hello.
Mine would be Electronic Arts, the producers of classics such as:
Archon
M.U.L.E.
Bard's Tale
One on One
That's just off the top of my head. Some other notable gaming companies were New World Computing, Accolade, EPYX and Activision.
Enjoy.

As we see in all these answers it depends on the genre of game:
How about Magnetic Scrolls for The Pawn, The Guild of Thieves or Infocom for HHGTTG, Leather godesses of Phobos?
Who did the Bards's tale?

Totally depended on the genre. Role playing, it's definitely Origin (Ultima, Space Rogue, Tangled Tales, etc.). Quality games, you hit Electronic Arts (Skate or Die, Sentinel Worlds, Starflight, Marble Madness, etc.).
I was also fond of Accolade, particularly for flight games. Nothing touches Ace of Aces.
Oooh... what about USGold? Outrun, Tower Toppler, the works.
There are just too many good game companies to pick a favourite. Heheh.

I'd seen Andy around on Lemon forums a few times and he ended up asking for my c.v. sent it and he said they were waiting for some contracts to be sorted then he'd probably have some work for me (GBA stuff). Not heard anything since or seen him on Lemon. I think they've got a PS2 game nearing final so he's probably just busy. |

Probably off topic but there's something that hit me about the game Tusker. There were some sound effects created for the game by Maniacs of Noise, but those SFX never was featured in the game, as I could not get the SFX option in the C64 game. Just Matt Gray's awesome music.

Well, too many good to mention, and many good games from small independant developers too.
But I would mention Epyx for Summer, Winter, World games, because those games can still make 5 grown men sit a whole afternoon and battle it out.
Something like IK+ or Delta, will only last 15 minutes, then we feel kinda bored. so.. :D
Well, System 3 I wouldnt really call a game company, more a publisher. From what i read they released several games, for which the developer got little or even nothing paid.
Worst example is IK+ - A Mclean simply has never gotten any money for this game. |

I went to system 3 offices one sunday as someone I knew was working on a game for them.
it was a small office building, but the really cool thing about the place.. Robin Levy's artwork on the wall, he was amazing at paper art also.
the ONLY thing that was good about sys 3 was the talent working for them.
Apex , Rowland boys were owed a shed load of money when thalamus when bust from what I gather.
so although both legendary companies.. there was the other side to them, beside the obvious talent.
probably one of my all time fav coders is John Twiddy, last ninja.. ikari warriors.. and of course the expert cart |

I dont think you can you name one single company as there were many who released many different great games on this machine.Oh sure you can say OCEAN,Rowland Bros(Mayhem) and Hewson and another dozen and still feel wanting to add more companies and their respective games to the list ;)
BTW-We are all retro freaks here so what makes you thinnk we would only have one single fave game?? I rest my case
