1541 ultimate

Hi Guys.

I just bought an 1541 ultimate (http://www.1541ultimate.net/content/index.php) that makes the c64 run on sd cards (and makes it possible to transfer files from/to a pc of cause). Don't know if anyone of has experience with that?

I'm having some troubles and I'm not sure if it is the 1541 ultimate or the c64 that's causing it. I can load the disc's fine on the 1541u, and load the programs from the disc too on the c64. But it seems like If I load programs that are bigger than a certain amount (ie. games) then I cannot run them. it just freezes up in different ways when I type run. I have 'power64' on my mac (Really amazing c64-emulator by the way!) it runs the same programs/games with no problems at all. What can it be? any suggestions?

Check the setup: Make sure to set the emulated 1541 as device 8. For more compatibility, deactivate the direct access to the SD card (usually set as another device). Just like with the real 1541, some loaders won't work if more than one 1541 is on the serial bus.
Next to mailing to Gideon, I recommend the Forum on the 1541 Ultimate website.

Yes, he will be just as confused like we are if you describe the problem like this. My 1541U works as it should, never had any problems with it. It doesn't sound like this is a problem that can be solved on a forum.

I'm sure it is on id-8 as I can load the programs. I have tried to load them without any turbo-load and with the 1541u in stand alone mode too. hmm.. I guess I will have to check the 1541u forum and/or e-mail Gideon.

(Sorry wrong quote it should have been MacGyver post)..

Your problem is most likely that:

1. Emus can often load files of any size if you use their special features for loading files quickly.

2. A standard C64 without any cart or so can't load files bigger than a certain number of blocks.

3. ...if you don't have a fastload system such as those found in Action Replay, Final Cartridge, JiffyDOS etc etc.

1541U does not have problems with this.

I can assure you that this is not something that you should bug poor Gideon with.

2: We are talking about standard games that are made to be loaded into ordinary 1541 drives on ordinary c64's, (so that argument is out of the question).

3: I have a fast load system as there is one build in the 1541u.

>1541U does not have problems with this<

well, maybe mine seems to have. Maybe it is the c64, maybe some setup stuff but there IS a chance too that the 1541u could be broken.

Make sure you are running the latest firmware of 1541 ultimate, I had a problem with action replay and large files before.

ole: on the other forum you said you press some other key than F7 in the startup menu on your computer... That maeans that you do not install the fastload routines needed.

Ok, that sounds interresting. I would say that "large files" is relative speaking. We are talking about larger than above 50 blocks or so (or maybe it isn't actually the size but I had luck with running a prg. on 36 blocks and one a little larger), but none between 50-190 blocks.

I'm not quite sure what you are refering to? I have tried to load with and without the fastload. I think you maybe are refering to a discussion about setup <f1>?
You can quote my text from the other source and paste it in here if you like, I'm not sure what you mean..

Sure it ain't the RAM of your C64 being flakey? Does a real diskdrive work?

Edit: The limit for a standard 64 without fastload cartridge is 202 blocks, so that is far out of range what you describe.

Uhh if could check with a normal disc-drive, the diagnostics would be a lot easier. I had a 1541-II in my cellar once but infortunately it is dead an burried now :(

The forum on 1541ultimate.net might be a better place for this?

You should try one of the diagnostic cartridges on the web and attach that in your 1541U.

http://www.zimmers.net/anonftp/pub/cbm/schematics/cartridges/c6..

Don't ask me how that works, I've never done it. Flashed that diag cart onto my Retro Replay once and it seems to work fine, doing all kinds of diagnoses.

I know, have removed i (It was just to see if it worked for anyone else as it apperently did), I don't think this is the right place to distribute software.

Yep, it's right here: http://noname.c64.org/csdb/help.php?section=intro

My point is: I just put up the link for someone to check if it worked on another system, after that was confirmed I removed it again. There is nothing special about the file I uploaded and there's a lot of places to find c64 software..

The end of the story!!

I found out of that one of my friends actually HAD a c64 in his basement. I have borrowed it, and everything works perfectly now! So the error is in the c64 and not in the 1541u.
