Ahh, great detective work, Groepaz!
I don’t think the emulators need fixing at all - if the demo isn’t waiting for loading to complete before continuing, that sounds like a “them” problem to me? Unless the problem happens on many more releases, I don’t see the point - would be better to just create a 100% version of this demo? | User Comment Submitted by iAN CooG on 30 August 2024
cheers for finding it, now there's a study case for making the emulators better and making demos more reliably working everywhere. | User Comment Submitted by chatGPZ on 30 August 2024
I tracked it down (TL;DR: demo is buggy)
The demo must rely on certain things being loaded in a certain time and then not wait until it is actually loaded. As for VICE - it was r40891 that broke it, this commit added more realistic track-skew when a d64 is mounted (and that will have some effect on the time needed for loading). Denise and HOXS probably do something similar, which explains why they also show the bug.
Since the track skew depends on how the disk was formatted, the same thing will happen on real hardware (with real drives), depending on how the disk was formatted.
That it works on 1541U here probably means that it is lacking proper track skew :) | User Comment Submitted by hedning on 30 August 2024
Still: If it works on real hw (I will also test - this time from disk as the loader/disk speed could be the issue?) there is no problem with the release. | User Comment Submitted by Raistlin on 30 August 2024
That it’s failing on 3 different emulators (VICE, Hoxs and Denise) makes me think that there’s -something- uninitialised somewhere… it seemed to me like the last part of the demo simply didn’t complete loading when it failed…. | User Comment Submitted by chatGPZ on 30 August 2024
... worked to end on C64C+1541UII | User Comment Submitted by chatGPZ on 30 August 2024
And it crashes after that plasma part in Denise 2.2 as well.
Someone should try this on the real deal - chances are its buggy and only ever worked right in VICE back then :) | User Comment Submitted by iAN CooG on 30 August 2024
Interesting, Vice 3.8 bugs horrendously on this, the "Onslaught 1995 - 2015" starfield doesn't move properly and it's red instead of white; the next part (end scroller) will produce just screen garbage.
Vice 3.2 (rev 34843) both x64 and x64sc work perfectly.
hoxs 1.1.2.6 fails to load after the white plasma part with flowers pic by Agod, so the "984 releases" part never show up. | User Comment Submitted by Raistlin on 30 August 2024
Nice demo - I can't seem to get it to run in VICE (final part bugs) or HOXS (crashes earlier on) for some reason..? | User Comment Submitted by Sith on 9 February 2017
Great demo, guys! I particularly enjoyed the pyramid and logo on 3 bars. The plasma screen looked stylish.
Special mention for the SIDs; some unique instruments in there. Especially the first music.
It would have been better if you let each photo rest inside the frame for a second or two.
More of this please Conjuror & team. | User Comment Submitted by Saphir on 24 December 2016 User Comment Submitted by ZZAP69 on 5 January 2016 User Comment Submitted by Oswald on 5 January 2016
