Event id #2286 : Intro Creation Competition 2014

After the success of last year's Intro Creation Competion, I want to continue and maybe we can even top last year.

After the big X party and while it is getting colder outside, you may have some sparetime to create something for it. ;)

Competition runs from October 28th until December 27th, 2014. So you have 2 months to deliver your creations. This should be enough for an intro.

As comment editing is still disabled, please use this thread for questions, discussion and everything else concerning this competition.

THE RULES:
- Has to work on a plain stock C64 (PAL standard) without any extensions.
- Has to be a one-part intro. Fade-ins and fade-outs are OK.
- Has to contain at least one Logo at whatever size you like.
- Has to contain a changing or moving text message (e.g. scrolling text, different lines fading in & out, etc.)
- Has to contain music (not just a humming sound, please).
- Maximum RAM usage is $4000 bytes at one block, at whatever location you like. Screen RAM counts as used memory. Exclusions are system addresses like VIC (inkl. Color RAM), SID, CIA, Stack, Zero-page, IRQ vectors.
- Has to be interruptable any time by pressing SPACE-key (exception are fade-in and fade-out).
- Graphics, charsets and music do not need to be exclusive, but the code should be! So no reuse of existing code with just exchanged graphics and music.
- Intros may not have been used before entering the competition.
- Entries must be handed in as executable format startable with RUN (.prg or embedded in .t64 or .d64).
- Max. 3 entries per participant. Entries might be taken back from the compo until deadline. That means if you want to remove one of your works from the compo to make space for another entry from you, this can be done until deadline.

Deadline for entry submission is December 27th, 2014 at 23:59:59 (11:59:59 pm) CET.
Voting closes one week later at January 3rd, 2015 at 23:59:59 (11:59:59 pm) CET.
Voting platform is CSDb (with all disadvantages it may have), therefore entries have to be posted here.
Entries will be ranked by weighted average of CSDb votes. Entries with the same weighted average are ranked by their percentages of 10s, 9s, etc.
No prices to win, just the fame. May the best creation win.

Might be too close for Datastorm (if any?) for me to participate, but it also sounds like a great sandbox to try some singlepart ideas. Anyways, I wanna fire up Relaunch64 and see what KickAssembler will help me to...

Ouch, I need a logo - hmmm... can I make it with C= balloons? ;-)

Please have someone add a new release category for separate compo entries like in this situation. Not that the voting system is fair today, but this will fukkup the one-filer category just like it did last year.. The problem is obvious.. entries will be voted 1-10 compared to the total of 20-30 entries in this compo, then after the compo the votes should be compared to all 1000's of one-filers since 1983, but they are of course never ajusted.

HCL: I got your Point, but I think in this case the releases will be uploaded as "crackintros" or "intros" so it wont fuckup the onefiler-demos like the "demo of the year compo" did last year.

Ok, and since i don't care about crack intros etc, the problem is none? Next time there is another compo, and the same problem again.

people will vote low for their own entries to gain high "correction"-votes and then change their vote in the last possible moment.
The problem of "new an fancy releases" that get all the 10-votes is present for all categories IMHO. gfx, cracks and yes, full-scale demos, too.

$4000 at one block during runtime is a full VIC bank, should be enough for an intro. You may place it wherever you like eg. $6000-$a000 or even $3456-$7456.

I even think 16k are far too much to be a good challenge. I'd prefer 8k max. Especially if you really want to use the intro later in a release.

Does a logo have to be "graphics" / char/font or can it be a combo of other ideas / sprites etc to be considered?

Nowadays. Atleast the regular intro. Back in the days intros for demos was just as normal. Ok, maybe not in the same quantity, but almost every demo had an intro.

Is there a good place to look for info on all aspects of NTSC fixing?

I know the info must be out there, ripe for searching, bug if anyone knows of specific useful links, then that'd be great if you could share.

It's probably worthwhile at least knowing everything that's involved with NTSC fixing.

If you don't have NTSC hardware, is emulation generally good enough to test?

Emulation is good for NTSC testing up to a certain degree. When it comes to jerky movements due to too less rastertime, the limit of emulation is reached.

So are the rules set now?

A crack intro competition could be a completely separate size-coding compo. e.g 2 or 4 blocks, PAL/NTSC/PAL-N/NTSCOLD? compatible.

What most said about 16K being a little over the top.

Last year's compo was big fun, but even though I optimized the result from release to release and 16K might do for most single-filed cracks, RAM waste remains just too big for some releases. Size/tinyness matters as soon as crack ain't singlefiler but covers almost whole disk size and you seriously run out of blocks. If it's not meant to be a crack intro competition, the whole "interruptable with space" part makes little sense and we could just label it One file demo competition.

Enough grumbling, rulez are rulez, Didi launched it, so he decides. Looking forward to steal a few effects be inspired by your entries. Maybe I take part with sth anyway :)

Come to think of it, Should NTSC be allowed a few bytes extra, you know, because we have to fix it, which may require extra code. Just curious...

No extra bytes for NTSC fixing. If you want to fix your intro, it has to be done within the size limit.
NTSC compatibility is appreciated but not mandatory.

BTW. Nice to see the first entries coming in!

We should be able to use all 16M of REU-RAM, otherwise a proper intro isn't possible. No, it's a fun limitation with 16K at runtime. I'll try to come up with something.

Should the code+gfx+sprites+screen resident the same
block (apart of the Vic + colors addresses) or they
could splitted to different locationa , but max. Ram usage: still up to $4000 bytes

All custom data has to be in the $4000 block you chose. Color and VIC data has to be copied where it has to be to make it work. ;) If I check RAM with ROMs turned off I need to see a max. $4000 long used block, whatever it is.

All entries are validated now.

Unforntunately I had to disqualify some of them:
- Bubbles Intro by The New Dimension (size limit)
- Chubby Chubby SID Chip by The New Dimension (size limit)
- Dotted Disaster Intro by Excess (size limit)
- Shitmen Intro #32 by Shitmen (no changing text message)
- UpsideDowntro by PandaLovers (size limit, no SPACE exit)
- Cashback Intro by Delysid (size limit)
If the entries are fixed until deadline, they may be back in.
Shitmen and PandaLovers entries seemed to be designed to be disqualified.

I also set 2 valid entries outside the compo because they were replaced by improved versions:
My Scary Intro by Warriors of the Wasteland
Raster-Disaster Intro by Excess

Changing text was put in as alternative to scrolltext, which was the reason to disqualify entries last year.

Time is up! A damn amazing amount of 51 valid intros made it into the compo!

Thanx people, this is fucking awesome!

Now everybody is responsible that we get a fair ranking by voting for all entries. Only a high amount of individual votes guarantees a rather fair result, because it makes single strategic up- or downvoting ineffective!

Voting closes at January 3rd, 2015 at 23:59:59 (11:59:59 pm) CET.

Did vote for every entry.. Knowing how insanely corrupt CSDB voting is I did the right thing: Downloaded every single entry, ran them all on real hardware several times, sorted them and placed votes in the scale from 4 to 10 not knowing current averages.

Angel of Death, you did get my upvote. You have a nice intro/reader, both pretty and I imagine practical, should be higher than the current 6.1 imo.

@CRT That is very cool of you! And even if you hadn't 'upvoted' me I would still respect the way you did vote. That is the only way good to do it. Comparing all the aspects of all the products side by side.
And I am aware that we are not an AAA group and that a (buggy) entry made in 2011 without any original graphics or music will not end very high up anyway. But the true 80's spirit still is: "we're the best, fuck the rest!" :)

Still a lot of room for improvement: max was 77 votes, min was 26 votes. Would be really cool if you'd get Richard to make one of his HTML-forms (like for Tapeloader Music Compo) for the next compo to avoid this in the future.

I dropped by to say 'thanks' to Didi for organizing this and ofcourse to the guys at ATL&F4 for asking my pixeling (well, PETSCIIing) hand for the graphics in their intro.

Working on what became my first ever full feature prod on the C64 was really fun. Actually, all these remote compos are a great thing, especially for scene 'outsiders' such as myself. :)

Hope to see more of those in '15 (oh, and happy new year).
